It only took about 2 hours to swap the upgrade parts: meant all my programs and games did not need reinstalled, so quicker and cheaper than a new pc.

In my office it needs to just work, so my laptops, desktop (newly upgraded Ryzen 7 mini pc) and even the mini pc powering the big screen all run windows 11, kept up to date and they have the various company sign ins
The only homebrew bit is my Magic Mirror server, running on a Pi, however this has gone beyond tinkering and (at least the office version) is stable, just works and would not be an issue if it did not
Now I do enjoy tinkering with PCs, but not when it is for work. Current projects include a T410 server and continued tinkering with Linux powered surface Pros
The office screen, powered by a Mini Pc. Final layout has now changed but it takes one click to login and get the news and magic Mirror screen showing

With budget constraints in mind I upgraded my PC hardware, MB, Ram, CPU, swapped out the front USB2 hub to USB3 and C for under £250 and can now upgrade to Win 11.
Like yourself I hadn't built a PC for some while but the knowhow soon came back.
The build was a breeze, my time was taken up with changing my existing SSDs file format and learning all about my new MB bios, that wasn't such a walk in the park.
But now I have a PC that should outlast me.
I suppose the only thing I might change is waiting for the day I can order from Amazon Prime a blister pack Quantum CPU.

hes upgraded his way without going out and buying another computer that he didnt want or need to buyas goes for me i bought a 50.00 pc ( screen keyboard,mouse pc base unit all in ) it was win 10 tried and slugish as hell takes forever
installed ssd hard drive then installed zorin linux and ive been getting used to it
as goes for speed its fast much faster
installed the programs i need for internet use installed firewall and antivirus free programs
that means no junk, no stupid aI, and theres plenty of freeware stuff out there

Most things seem easier now as plug and play - not jumpers and dip switches to set, just update bios. Though my office 2016 tells me I have reached the maximum number of installs on my product key when trying to run Excel!It is.

Running windows 10 on the shed laptop, I was getting install windows 11 notifications for a while, but now they have stopped, I guess that is because MS have extended support 
Is there a safe link to check hardware compatibility?

to install w11 on non compatible hardware (this needs to be a clean install)
download the iso (3rd link from top)
download and run rufus
insert a 8gb or bigger usb key.
in rufus
under device select the usb stick
under boot selection select the w11 iso you just downloaded
leave the rest as default and click start
a menu called windows user experience will appear
tick all the boxes
click ok.
when its created, restart pc and boot from the usb key (exact instructions differ depending on bios and its settings)
install w11.
done.
to be honest, i use this installer on compatible hardware also as it removes the need for a microsoft account and a few other +'s

But the check only tells you the state of your PC/laptop compatibility as is and nothing about simple hardware upgrades to major ones required.
Yes there are but if PC is/becomes compatible it should be automatic via Window Updates.
That should be explained a little further.
By clean install a PC user will lose everything, files programs/apps, everything, it is a clean Windows install, so users should back up everything they want to keep and run.
Even then, some back ups/programs/applications may not be recognised or run under Win 11.
The great thing about a clean install is the user is assured of no lurking nasties which is why backup files should be run through a AV first.

Well done on the upgrade...I always dread having to fiddle with my computers...but once I get going I usually find that nothing much has really changed. Provided you buy compatible stuff it's generally plug and play.
This thread has reminded me I need to sort the battery on my old (2013) MacBook pro...I was a bit annoyed as in my head I'd only just replaced it. Looking at my purchase history...was 5+ years ago!

I worked out a complete plan to move to Linux for the business, then took on a contract with MS Project as a prerequisite, plus Teams is a must these days and it is terrible in a browser

you should also make it clear that if you upgrade a non recomended pc that any future updates will not be installed
therefore you are no longer protected by any future updates
also any shops that try to sell them including ebay must tell shoppers that they cannot upgrade that pc with any further updates as that would be breaking there buying rights
the offline versions still work for free
whilst many can use an offline pc in free mode anyone can transfer the files to a new office system thats updated and send from that pc
as goes for linux libre office is free
and both can be swaped between them

the pc is only an i3 8gb ram cheap and therefor a test machine something to play with and get used too whilst i have both machines to play with for now sooner or later i will end up on full linux for the online stuff anyway but for me thats within another 6 months
so 6 months to get used to the new layout and use it from there
linux for games machines its come along way and sooner or later more and more programs will be available for it
europe is already pushing the way of linux
i prefer windows 7 and i like, something i control when it updates whilst im fine using it online or even offline
windows 8, 8.1, 10 or 11 i dont like and i dont like the way windows says we want want yearly payments for this that and the other

I don't game so that doesn't bother me
I would go fully Linux but everything is too ingrained for windows
And for anything other than very basic tasks libre office does not compare to MS, they have unfortunately cornered the market
I've even tried Nextcloud on my own server but sharing external had too many issues
Going back to SSD there seems to be a myriad of SSD on amazon lately. I usually buy crucial or Samsung but their prices have stayed high. 50% more than other brands. Allegedly my Crucual has been duff ever sionce I installed it about a year ago. so not sure of the sense of buying branded if all they do is over charge.

I bought a Acer one last week, only 250gb as a boot drive, £16. Ran some basic tests and it seems fine, but its not mission critical
Win 11 full upgrade on my old i5 2500k based system a couple of days ago;
Install TPM plug in module (1.2) on motherboard
MBR2GPT on the SSD (live, and AllowFullOS).
Into bios to change from Legacy to UEFI
RegEdit as per the ZDNet Win11 on old pc article

i avoid crucial on the low end of there gear some of there high end gear is better
whilst samsung has always been greedy with prices
but that lexar ns100 is good on the stats and near on equal to samsung

There are a lot of fake SSDs on Amazon - I'd only ever buy from an official manufacturer on there, such as Crucial, Samsung or WD.
Nothing at all wrong with Crucial - they're the retail arm of Micron Technology who are one of the top three memory manufacturers by volume (the other two being Samsung and SK Hynix).
Of course, it's possible to get a dud Crucial SSD like it is possible to get a dud from any manufacturer, as it is possible to get fake SSDs with these names on.
But Crucial is an excellent, reputable brand.
