Barry Scott and his Cillit Bang can take a hike, tesco value tomato sauce is in the lead so far!
I'm only doing small test patches at the mo and haven't tried cola yet, ketchup is good though cos it doesn't run off.

Hi,

the great thing about using cola is that, assuming it's in a bottle, you've got an instant spray facility avaliable...

place your thumb over the open end, shake it up, and ease one side of your thumb away...

you'd get it into more places than WD40 with a nozzle pipe attached!

I think cola would work well but the copper needs to soak in it really so for large sheets like I've got it wouldn't be practacal. To be honest, none of the things I've tried so far are anything like as effective as the pickling paste but then knowing what's in it I'd expect that stuff to pretty much shift anything.

ok stupid idea but what about using a plumbing descaler/cleaner

Descaler only removes the calcium deposit, it won't touch the oxide layer unfortunately.

Citric acid (lemon juice) and salt will clear it nicely. The coke doesn't work too well if you don't degas it first, leaves tiny spots where the bubbles has been.
