Denham lathe

I have been offered a denham lathe don't know what model it is, it has around about a 8" swing and about 60" bettwen centres, I'm struggling to find mutch about these lathes, dose anyone have any experience with them?

As I need to give the chap a decision weather I want it or not in the next cupple of days, I would like to know as mutch as I can, as I haven't really got space but if it is really worth the effort I will find or make space.

It looks like a proper old fashioned bit of British engineering

Well I'm certainly no lathe expert, but I'd like to see it on a stronger base than a couple of old pallets!

I've had a look on there, it's my main resource for lathe info but the Denham page focuses on the smaller models.

I would love the extra capacity, just the 11' x 4' footprint is a big use of space.

from what i understand they are pretty much the same as any other big lathe. I would love one that big and have been keeping a close eye on a dean smith and grace that is coming down in price slowly

That's a proper lathe that'll do pretty much anything you need it to do. It'll even rip off your arm and beat you to death with the soggy end. I'd say it was a 8" centre height, so a 16" swing. At a guess, I'd expect it to weigh at least a couple of tons maybe three and have a fairly hefty motor like 7-10hp. Not the kind of machine that's going to happily run from a domestic supply.

It got a 10hp motor, and as you say it's a proper lathe, I have a 3 phase supply so running it isn't a problem. It doesn't seem to have a removable gap pice that is a down side.

even with a gap bed your still limited to what u can tun as the gaps are generaly about 8 inch long and u would have to bolt whatever u are doing to a face plate otherwise u would loose half of that using a chuck .so its no big deal not having a gap bed as it would rarely be used unless u do a lot of flange work or cutting and widening car wheels with split rims

Well I think I've made my decision I'm going to get it and give it a try because ile know ile regret it if I don't.

So I'm going to work out a plan to get it into my workshop and see how mutch work it needs to get it up and running again as I don't think it's been used since the early 90's and it's a bit rusty

I have to ask, out of curiosity, what the asking price is?

It wont make much difference to me - my lathe worked out to be £1!
(i guess plus the ebay fees from selling all the redundant stuff that came with it : )

I don't know yet as I don't know how heavy it is yet, if you know what I mean.

Time, I wish that's nearly at a premium as much as space, but as I'm so often told if you don't try you won't succeed.
