Delphi sedimenter parts?

So, i have one of these -

My fuel causes seal number 29A to swell, and the recess that it sits in isnt much of a recess at all, so it escapes out of the side, and looses the seal.

The seal is a rectangular cross section, rather than an o ring. I dont have good measurments, but i could attempt to get them. Its just a dephi sedimeter, fitted to loads of stuff. I suspect the seals are the same as all the delphi cartridge filters, but i cant find an actual part number anywhere.


Is anyone familiar with these? I figure my options are to either get a big bag of replacement seals, and just keep replacing them, or get some sort of viton thing that will last.


Im just fishing for any pointers / info really!

methyl esters. they creep into / through some rubbers.

Thank you. Ive subsequently found, as you say, that i can get them easy enough, eg this -

The seals on the top of typical "spin on" type filters swell in the same way, but you change them with every filter.
The sedimenter seals are not a service item in the same way. Obviously they can be, but thats not the intention.

If i can just replace them with a viton then they will last forever without a further thought.

Ah yeah unless you can find the specific rubber that's resistant you might be on to a loser.

Can you buy the appropriate sheet rubber and cut your own?

Maybe. Ive never seen viton sheet, but ive never looked for it either.

The americans seem more into viton. You can buy fuel line and stuff from america thats made of it, but it seems thinner on the ground here.

I guess i should buy some new ones, take some measurements, and see if can find somthing on somthing else made of viton that will fit. Might be a bit trial and error...

I took some measurements -

The ID is 3"

...then on to metric.

The height of the seal is 3mm (aprox)
The OD is the ID plus 2x4mm (aprox)

(ie the cross section is 3mm x 4mm aprox)

All aprox, as the ID is certainly 3" but then small imperial measurements hurt my brain.

Nitrile is what i suspect the OEM are made of, which is no good, but your supplier does FKM also, which i think, is the same as viton.
They do sheet... but im looking at half a grand a mtr, so i think ill pass on that plan.

They also do the stuff off the roll in FKM. It may still be a bit too far away in cost from the tedium of just changing out the OEM seals every 6 months though (£50 for 1 mtr vs a £1.70 seal)


I think i need to look about to see if i cant find somthing else the right sort of size, but, of course, sellers just say what the seal is for, rather than give the dimensions in their ads, so there could be loads, but its just hard to tell.

Ive decided to just put off a proper solution for a while, by buying 4 OEM. i mean they will last a while, and then i can curse not having done it properly when they fail

The methyl esters are the "go" bit.

A vegetable oil is a tri glyceride. A glycerine molecule with three ester side chains.

You chop off the side chains and swap the heavy sugar alcohol for a much smaller, simple alcohol.

All this is simply to change the viscosity.

But, yes, the methyl esters are the product, not a by product. The reaction is called "transesterification" - moving esters about.

A typical issue is older Bosch injection pumps (not that old even - 90s era) would, in time, fail, as the methyl esters would attack the front seal. It's standard practice for a viton front seal to be fitted as a replacement now, regardless of application, and this will be stable.

I had a couple, one with a smashed bowl and passable seals (swollen but not so bad I've not, it seems, not been able to locate them) and the other with good glass but seals popping out.

I've made one, I hope, ok one -

It's the one between the glass and the upper metal that goes. Which is the same part number as the one below the glass - but that one does not fail as it's kept restrained better, whilst the top one can partially escape up, between the glass and the metal.

Could you just remove the sedimentor?

I run the 200tdi on SVO so no transesterification in my case but no seal problems.

My original thought though was that defenders (pre td5) didnt (i think) have a sedimetor.

I run an electric lift pump from Facet that kinda does the same job as a sedimentor. I got tired of lift pumps failing which i suspect was in part due to the veg oil.

It will likely be very similar.
CAV were the original manufacturer and produced a range of filters/sedimenters that used the same head, with various combinations of bowls/filters/baffles depending on the final application, and seemed to be used by pretty much every diesel manufacturer for quite a few years.
CAV were bought by Lucas, who were then bought by Delphi.
