Dehumidifier woes

I've a very old Samsung unit, I bought it off a mate 20yrs ago, god knows when he bought it.

For as long as I can remember the condensing coil freezes up, and will run continuously until you either heat to defrost it or turn it off to defrost. The time it takes to do this depends on ambient temp, so faster in colder months when needed most.

I'm guessing the auto defrost has stopped working?

I have a Samsung that is probably a similar age (see pics). I suppose you have tried playing with the controls. If the hunudity stat is turned up it seems to run for longer before heating up to condense the frost on the coil. I keep mine about halfway position.

Had a multitude of dehumidifiers over the years and mart's method is the only way I got to stop problematic icing ones from icing up. You either reduce the level it's set at or you heat the room it's in. I find the newer ones to be less bother than ones from a while ago.

i got a cheap micromark one 10 years ago and still running .all it has had is the radiator dust blown out and oil the bearings on the fan motor i allso have a large andrews building drier i scored for 50 quid not working . was only a wire off

Prob the hot gas coil has failed it reverses the condenser and evaporator the fan stops and the compressor will continue to run pushing the refrigerant into the evaporator and the cold gas runs into the condenser thus defrosting the iced evaporator. That is provided the dehumidifier you have has this facility to operate in temps below 0deg i have repaired hundreds as a fridge fixer for thirty odd years. I am assuming the fan is still operating.

Mart, That's the same model I have. And use it, as you have described.

Lotus, The fan runs just fine. what do you suggest to test it?

Take the cover off put 240v on the hot gas coil coil see if it energises or if you have a tester test for open circuit. I am assuming the evap is freezing up and not defrosting.
It may have a time clock to bring on the defrost that could be jammed

Hot gas solenoid works. How do I test the timer?

Turn it clock wise it prob brings on the defrost after an hour or two post some pics i may be able to help more. assuming it is a clock not electronic.

I've just taken the timer of the chassis and there is a knob on the back, turning it stopped the fan. And has now defrosted the coil.

There may be a screw driver slot to turn it to defrost. all it does is switch the fan off and bring the hot gas valve on. the compressor should run of the humidistat only. Tak a pic of the wiring for yourself and take the clock out and have a look

Great now you have the problem timer is not running it may have jammed try some lube in there or ebay a replacement

the timer is a Sankyo TMDE212TCI.

Just get one fully adjustable with pegs or push over pegs and set it to defrost at say every 1/2hours depending how cold the environment and how much water is in the air it is working in
It may work now you have moved it prob nylon cogs in there it may have striped one. I will be back in the w/shop now i have warmed up speak later.
PS you will need one with 5 terminals timer motor L/N/ common n/open normally/closed connections
