After much research and head-scratching.
Thought I'd update this thread.
You cannot/should not change from R407C to other gases, in particular R134A (for cars).
It's not advisable to change from one gas to another, pressures and compressors are different.
But thank you for all the input.
So I'm fitting 2 x Schrader valves, using an argon shield to shield the brazing.
Then I'll check for leaks with a vacuum pump and take it from there, it's a start at least.
I'm assuming there's little or no gas in the system but will be working outside for safety.
