I started out with a clapped out Drummond M Type with no dials, the Chinese lathe would have been a massive step up for me. Keep practising and learning from your mistakes, it is what I did.

I had one of those, it was a horrible keyboard to use and it stopped working after i accidentally stood on it. I really wouldnt recommend them unless there is no other option.What about the

With using the WP20 torch a bit more I realised that the tungsten grinder would be a bit useless after a few sharpens due to the short length of the tungstens used in the small torches.
Thought a bit about it and bought a cheap pin vice set from eBay. I reduced the dia of the nut to 11mm and will reduce the stem a bit more then fit a sleeve to act as a bearing surface and a stop. It will mean I can grind tungstens as short as 20/25mm.
Pic below of half modified pin vice, it will hold 1.6 to 3.2 tungstens. Also a pic of the modified design.

What about drilling a hole to a certain depth somewhere on the tool to act as a setting gauge.
Insert tungsten till it bottoms out, slide on pin vice and tighten, remove tungsten and pin vice and transfer it to the grinding hole.

get hold of a cubitron flexible grinding wheel [green]eats tungsten like butter, be easy to make an enclosed guard with a guide for the pin chuck
have you tried the oxy acetylene trick hold a 3.2 tungsten in the pin chuck full length vertical. wearing your welding helmet start heating the end of the tungsten it gives off a bright light ,continue heating about an inch at the top till it is melting then with due regard for fire ,people around you give it a quick flick and hey presto you have a long tapered tip, its discoulored but after strike up it goes clean
an old inspector told me of arab welders doing this as they had no grinder ,needless to say i thought bs so i tried it and after a bit practice it certainly works

The flap discs I use on the angle grinder work well enough when not at the grinder but I prefer to have tungsten grinder if working away.
Interesting about the oxy/acet but don't have such a thing, haven't bought Acetylene for years.

Got my Tax returns finished so had a few hours this afternoon at the workshop. Decided I would make the swing arm for the grinder but only had a small amount of Alu thick enough so decided to use Delrin just in case it needed modified.
Milled out the shape from a piece of 120mm dia then shoved in the lathe and parted out the arm.
Next job was to bore the holes and round the ends and also widen the slot in the grinder head to accommodate the pin vice.
Got it put together and then found an issue, the pin vice is cheap and as usual with very cheap stuff it is crap. It is a mile out of round, I knew it was a bit out due to the way the nut machined the last day but the jaws are even further out than that. So either I will have to make my own or see if I can get a decent one at a reasonable price, it will likely be the former.
Ok so because of the pin vice not being true the tungsten didn't grind evenly all the way round, also I don't have the pin vice sleeved yet so it was relying on the nut only for running on. It did at least give me an idea how it was going to work and it seems like it should be fine.

Offset grind.
If I work on the princilpe that the pin, chuck end, is concentric and the offset with the tungsten is caused by it not clamping with the tungsten held centrally, would different sized collets for the other end to centralise the tungsten make the grind better?
