Decent quality screws, bolts etc from high street suppliers

I'm fed up of soft metal screws that disintegrate with the slightest pressure. Just tried to get the front door handle off to paint the door - all four screws rounded off straight away; easily done with a power screwdriver but happened with just a hand held one too.

Which high street/retail park chain stores sell decent screws and fixings? B and Q? Screwfix? Any recommendations? I know to avoid Silverline. The postage cost seems to make buying from specialist suppliers very expensive, but any ebay recommendations with low p and p would be welcome.

The use would be both wood screws and screws for metal on my car restoration.

The brands from Screwfix are usually pretty good including Spax and Goldscrew but tend to big quantities unless you buy a selection tray.

Goldscrew are nice. I bought some of the cheap look-a-like from toolstation once and my impact driver would just sheer the shafts on them. Dont think ive ever managed that with the gold screw. Rounded heads, sure, but not actually sheering the shafts.

Is there a difference between gold and silver?

I just used 2 boxes of 6 x 150 mm - one gold and one silver (that's what my local screwfix had). I noticed zero difference other than the colour.

The silver are (used to be ) as crap as all the others ... not bought any for years

Another vote for Timco...although I'm equally happy using Screwfix Turbogold.

All the above are generally ok but the best IMO are Reisser screws

For screws Reisser and Forgefast are very good and not to badly priced. Timco etc are very good but they do get pretty expensive.

Screwfix Gold/Silver screws are perfectly fine in my experience, they do a couple of different versions, but I don't have any bother even the bottom end ones. They aren't as nice as premium brands in terms of features - e.g. if you are going close to an edge. Often you need to pilot - but for a basic screw this isn't really an issue. Toolstation do Spectre which I've just opened a pack of, so far so good.

I tend to find screwfix's nuts and bolts to be better quality than the packs sold by toolstation, but both are expensive - better to go online to the likes of orbital or fastco.

Never had any problems with the Toolstation forgefast ones - always buy the torx bit ones though rather than pozi's
