I suppose its all closed for the duration ? The river Don engine is what i wanted to see in action.

I'm really not sure, I finished there 2 years ago or so.
I can't remember seeing it run, but it's very impressive to look at even so.
If you're looking for good industrial heritage sites - Queen street Mill, before they closed down in 2016 - I think I visited a week or so before they closed to the public... I believe they have opened again now.
Almost untouched, full of lineshafts and machinery all still hooked up. Their 500hp steam engine was impressive to watch, too not on the scale of the River Don engine, though!

For lots of reasons I know the story and the history well and I sincerely hope they triumph after the tragedy. If you are looking for a very special gift for a special person this Christmas, you could do a lot worse.

I've walked past there and thought "Do they really just make scissors?", I was with people less interested in tools than I so I couldn't investigate. Probably for the best as I'm sure I'd have bought something.

Its the biggest ever built....or something like that...it is enormous....used to run a rolling mill at, what is now, Sheffield Forgemasters......bit before my time (yes it really was)

Just had a Google and the River Don engine is far more powerful at 12,000HP (Most powerful still running in Europe apparently), the Kempton park engines are only (only ) 1,008HP each, they are physically much larger though, presumably down to them being triple expansion as opposed to single.

They probably don't have to reverse, they are pumping sewerage, one way (hopefully).

Davy Brothers became Davy United who built loads of steelworks machinery, rolling mills etc.......they went through various buy outs until they merged with Markhams of CHesterfield.....they built the Channel Tunnel Channelling machines

the thing that got me when I saw that was, wasnt the size, noise or how quickly it can change direction, but the valve gear that operates valves on the engine.

if you compare it to most other steam engines the eccentrics which operates the valves are missing, as the Joy valve gear used is operated from by the crankshaft, so looks much simpler.

the kempton engine is a triple expansion engine so uses the steam 3 times to increase the efficiency. the don valley engine is more about raw power so each cylinder one the engine uses the steam once.

the kempton engine will only run in one direction, but the don valley engine is designed to change directions quickly which will be why it has 3 separate cylinders too.

as it turned out....at the time I think they believed they were doing the right thing....there were lots of stupid people promoted to a level of incompetance.

In my experience its usually the stupid people promoted in good jobs. An idiot i worked with years ago drilled a hole through the palm of his hand, a few weeks later he had a cushy "Managerial" job, probably counting paper clips.
