on a thread hijack, I'm after some fine needle files if anyone can recommend some that arn't too expensive. normal needle files are too coarse for me.

if there decent english make ones and just a bit blunt clean em off with a wire brush and drop them in to a bucket with battery acid in leave them abouy 7 hours take them out and wash them and they will cut well

I'm guessing that there wont be many people with buckets of battery acid lying about and not that you can get concentrated sulphuric acid these days anyway.

What about second hand files, how do you sharpen a used file? A harder file?

Bought a faithful set as the kennedys are so old - just keep going back to the kennnedys, the new faithful are rubbish compared

Ive heard vinegar works too. Ive certainly desolved steel with it when de rusting stuff.

As for files, I buy them of the file guy at Newark. Don't know if he sells online but they are decent quality.

It's called drain cleaner... bottle in a bag in a sturdy cardboard box at a proper ironmongers.

You can get an EPP (Explosives, Poisons and Precursors) licence for about £40 quid if you aren't a terrorist or thug, lasts three years and lets you buy such "dangerous" chemicals, need a reason and a referee - e.g. a local copper or similar - who can vouch for you.

Most of the decent hand files used to come from India and were cast steel diamond cut ( MOD quality ) all I recall is that they were stamped " JK made in India , so long as you used a file card to clean them and stored them in an oily canvas set of envelopes on a roll they rarely ever wore away .
This might be worth exploring .

Old farriers files are fantastic on ones heels when out of the shower..
not sure of the make though.

I sharpen rotary mower blades with a grinder & flap disc, then finish by using a flat file to remove the burrs. ( I used to do this for a living)

Join the Modern World - use a dremelloid, much faster and a smoother result. Angle grinders work too, but best to use a variable speed and run the Scotchbrite slow.
