Dealing with people with items for sale

Haggleing.is great and you can often find the middle ground (price) And is fine in my book if you go to see something on ebay prior to the finish, or email with a deal before the auction ends. But folks that bid and win an item and then want to haggle about the price is not on, unless the item was not found to be as advertised

I can’t be doing with people that won’t name a price but ask you to make an offer, I can’t be the buyer and the seller, and any first offer I make is going to be pitifully low.

Also on Facebook, no price on ad, on me for price. In other words “ I know ive priced it stupidly high, I’m just hoping I can find someone naive that will pay it before someone points out it’s stupid money”

That's what I like to do. Go see the item and deal before auction ends. They end up with good cash and we come away with item and a possible contact incase something else comes up for sale.

Going back to the original poster about selling on Ebay

The issue is that Ebay does not like any haggles off site, if the item is removed because it has sold elsewhere then Ebay can still charge the seller fees if they can detect a deal has been done. So the sellers can loose out doing that and for many it is easier to let things run on the site.

If you don't like it don't shop on Ebay.

When I worked in a junk shop er used camera emporium you would often get someone who wanted a camera body a couple of lenses and various odds and sods and would ask what the best price was. I would add up all the items and add 10 per cent or so, when or if they twigged what I had done I would explain that it was a much better price because I would be making more commission, we would then have a laugh I would knock a few quid off the original price and everyone would be happy.

Considering they were on his table at the end of last summer I think not.
I remember as I bought a cheap China swivel vice from him and left the 1 and 3. Easy to spot as he sells plants.

I agree, offered a bloke 50p for a grease pompom on Sunday, only to get the "Oh no it's worth lots more than that!" needless to say I didn't buy it.
I also hate digging through boxes to see if there's anything interesting. If I don't know if it's the £1 box etc, can't see the point in wasting my time digging through just to get a silly price when I ask.

I was looking on gumtree on Sunday and spotted a chainsaw for repairs £20 along with a hedge trimmer for £15 so I asked if they were still available and when could I come for them and where, bearing in mind they are 50 miles away. We went out for the afternoon and when I checked my emails later the seller had replied that the saw is still for sale but trimmer has gone,then he sent another reply with a post code (not an address) and asked me when I was thinking of coming for them then another reply which was just a question mark probably because I had not been in and answered his other two emails immediately. I sent another reply saying I am retired and any time Monday convenient for him would be fine with me. The saw is still for sale and I received no more replies, I'm not that desperate for another project but I do wonder sometimes what motivates people. Come tomorrow at 4.00 or whenever would have been easy enough.

I have an easy solution, when selling and someone asks to come and have a look I mention what my bottom price is and hell would freeze over before accepting a penny less, it eliminates a massive amount of chancers.

They know where they stand and what it will cost them and I don't waste an hour of my life with them thinking they can get something for half it's value.

If your price is fair there is always someone will pay it.

The selling prices on Gumtree and the like are so low now that its not worth bothering when you have to factor in the time wasters and insulting offers, non English speakers calling you up at all hours talking in Enigma code, and the ones that complain the £500 item your selling them for £10 is not perfect and has a little scratch on it.

You used to get half the new price for a good condition item, then it went down to a third, and now its just a token amount, if you have to repair the item or give it a clean its not worth your time.

I've got 19 ads running on Gumtree at the moment, and similar on Shpock. I'm giving up as soon as my current stock is all gone.

^^ I'm with you on this one. In the middle of a clearout, had 2 replies to my ads, both got my name & address, neither showed up. Offered 2 items on Freecycle in response to want-ads, not even a "thank you but no thank you". There's a guy at the top of our street, bit a wheeler-dealer but small time. I'll take my stuff to him to sell and if I get a few cans of beer then that's fine. What doesn't sell he can keep or scrap.

I usually just ask them via text/email if they will take X amount, if they say no then I don't bother driving round. On the other hand I have a mate who will never give an offer over text/email as he likes to put the pressure on them in person and his neck is so brass I've had to walk away from cringing sometimes, but my goodness if he doesn't get deal of the century almost every time. He's fully prepared to waste the petrol money and drive away though if they aint up for a haggle, so you just have to be prepared for it to go both ways.

I guess am old fashioned in one way. Like to talk face to face with a pocket of cash and have a deal. A poker of cash use to speak volumes .now it doesn't.

if a person says offers i will start at a 5er even if its a £300 pound item the shock on there face is normaly a picture

On a forum I used to be a member of and very active in the club, we had 2 standards of “mint”

I’m fussy with car parts, so something that’s mint has to be perfect, not perfect but or perfect except, just perfect

I would often go look at “mint” items and either walk away or bid them very low. Any item I thought was mint became known as Kayos mint, to the point that before the club imploded due to infighting stuff would be advertised as Kayos mint (much to my annoyance)

If you won’t haggle with me I probably won’t buy, I set my prices as I expect a haggle, some people think they are gas monkey and offer you half, maybe thinking they are clever but they are gotten rid of quickly.

At the end of the day we all want the best price for buying or selling. I not slagging eBay. I get the impression that some people are afraid to price items and don't like the confrontation of a good traditional haggle. The two items I am trying to have a deal with on the bay are a no go. They are hell bent to let it go to auction. Fair enough.
