The crows in my area peel the wiper blade rubbers off..ime sick of replacing mine and only buy really cheap ones now

Strange. They can teach each other but what strikes me is why? Wild creatures only do things for reason - what on earth are they doing with them?

I think its maybe a learned behaviour and probably has no purpose other than what it meant to the first one that taught its mates!

My neighbour was going through rubber seals on his kitchen DG windows at the rate of one a fortnight, from about 04:00 till they got moved on they just mobbed his windows. This went on for almost two years before they were moved on permanently - now they are 'gone' the replacements that have moved in a year or so down the line show no interest in the windows at all.

This kind of thing is always a puzzle. A mate of mine who has woodland, and is a woodworker, says his lime trees are ruined because the woodpeckers have suddenly decided to peck them all in rings around the trunk. It's not enough to kill them, but it leaves horrible black spots in the wood. When I asked him why, he said god knows, which bluetit suddenly decided that it would be a good idea to peck at the shiny thing on top of the bottle on the doorstep, and why? No idea, but one of them did, and ever since then every milk bottle everywhere has had bluetits nicking the cream off the top of the milk...

It must have a purpose either nest material or a mistake that it's food

they just pulled it out and left it where it fell, if they mistook it for food I think they would have unlearned the behaviour. They aren't stupid enough to waste substantial effort on 'nothing'

Theres no trace of rubber left behind when they do it..i thought nesting material myself.

maybe im missing something re the crows and magpies so could anyone give me a reason not to think of them as flying rats?

dont get me wrong, i like birds in general but i just cant come up with a good reason why we need crows or magpies about, certainly not in the quantities there seems to be these days anyways.

dont get me wrong, i like birds in general but i just cant come up with a good reason why we need crows or magpies about, certainly not in the quantities there seems to be these days anyways.

they very often mob the sparrowhawk and inadvertently stop it using the other garden birds as a quick snack.. they mob the local cats as they approach the feeders in my back garden.

Crows function as rubbish removal. Dead carcasses soon get picked clean and limit infections developing or being spread

Magpies and crows function also as population limiters. If breeding of song birds was 100% - it would soon totally crash with supply of food and nesting

Speaking of crows, the Highways Agency recently reported a large number of dead crows found on main roads in North Yorks.

There was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone's relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts.

However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colours of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By analysing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with lorries, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

The Highways Agency then hired an Ornithological Behaviourist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.

The Ornithological Behaviourist very quickly concluded the cause: when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger.

The scientific conclusion was that while all the lookout crows could say "Cah", none could say "Lorry."
