what would be the simplest (cheapest) way to power a 180v DC motor?

I am planning to build a sharpening device to sharpen carbide scraper blades and I have the chance of a DC motor / gearbox that is about the correct rpm for the application. I don’t need speed control, just wanting to know wether it will be worth the hassle or should I keep looking for something more suitable?

CSR phase angle chip and a bridge rectifier. Maybe a capacitor for smoothing. Easy peasy japanesey.

I have one of these. They work but they give a 'noisy' signal. You hook up a potentiometer to it and it can adjust from 0 to 240v output. Stick a bridge rectifier on it and you get adjustable voltage DC.

Yes they are noisy.

A variac, bridge rectifier and capacitor would be another option. No line noise and simple as dirt to hook up.

Depending upon the size of the motor you may well be better off just buying a variable speed controller off ebay they just need putting in a case and are not really that expensive

That was the first thing I looked at, but I can’t seem to find anything With a 180v output, everything seems to be 12-24v range.

The motor is rated at 0.65A which is mutch lower than I expected as it’s quite a chunky thing. A variac is looking like the best option up to now although I would like something more self contained.

Try searching for 180V DC Controller - you will find a variety of them stating at about £11
