Day One, I opened the box, a bit pic heavy

Well folks, I decided that after lying here a fortnight I should open the box
Was struggling a bit for some material so decided to improvise, well, it's no good as a bumber bar


Thought it could be my welding table


2 mins with a flap disc and it's nice and shiny


Can't put it off any longer, time to be a welder Clarke TE151


Put it all together and followed the tutorial re wire tensioning. Have some bits of 1mm so set it at MIN, 2, wire speed 6 and gas at 4. It is the CO2 that came in the box. Couldn't resist a quick try:


Will get some of the 1mm sheet now and give it a go, more later I hope

Here we are 30 mins on. Tried a few runs


Bit of a problem tho' the back is still smooth ass a baby's bum Moving the torch too fast? Not enough power?


Went a bit slower here, even managed to blow a hole


Now there seems to be a bit of penetration


Where I'm getting the penetration the weld seems very flat on the front, is this right? There a couple of bits where the height of the weld is the same front and back, is this what I should be aiming for?

Looks good.

With CO2, the weld will sag when you reach 100% penetration causing it to have more on the back. An argon mix will be more symmetrical.

I normally try to get to it just start penetrating, more like your first picts.

Thanks Scott, I was hoping it wasn't too bad for a first timer. Call it impatience or curiosity but I wanted to try a join Here's the result


But strangely enough it took a fair walloping

And when it did, it was along the edge of the "weld" not the joint. I think a fair first day and now it's time for a beer or three
