Dashcam recommendations 2024

Reading other insurance threads people keep mentioning dash cams. I guess I should think about one too!

What is a good current recommendation for one please? Say max £100 budget and something unobtrusive and easy to wire in. Rear view good to have too? Or not so critical since by law the person who may rear end you is at blame?

forget budget remember even if you never need the use of a dashcam consider a few things

saves your premiums in no fault accidents
cancels knock for knock claims 50/50 used by insurance companies

as quoted front view and also rear view is worth considering also note there is some that do record 360 degrees
fastening the dashcam many use the easy fix but sometimes the solid fix is better as the camera dosnt go up at moment of bump

also be very aware it shows your bad driving as well that includes the speed you was doing at the time of accident

Totally theoretical

But let's say I didn't advise my insurance and take the discount for having a working Dash cam installed at all times.

And if I know I was speeding or at fault then I don't provide the footage to anyone and bin the camera / wipe it.

I presume the other driver or other 3rd parties cannot force you to provide the footage if the camera is in your own car?

Of course the above is theory only as I never speed or anything like that.

gonna get a rear one for wifes car now too as its just a no brainer really

That is incorrect but is how in many cases it works both in law and insurance claims.

Regardless of hype unlike a black box, fitting a dash cam doesn't cut premiums, in most insurance claims, regardless of fault, premiums will rise.

A dash cam however does in many cases clarifi fault.

Forget most of the hype in budget dash cams blurb,, rarely does a budget dash cam below a £100 give you anywhere near decent quality.

To answer your question directly, pay 35 quid, you will get 35 quid of quality, been there, done it, no effing good.

Your original budget was £100 stick to it if you can.

For just a little more, ( and might do better with a BF deal or a used eBay job ), consider a Nextbase 222XRWC.

Not everyone likes the brand and by no means is the model mentioned the be all/end all of dash cams, far from it but it is solid enough, reasonable images/quality, quick mount/dismount and with a rear camera.

A quick search and I see Halfords are doing an upgrade to this camera the 320XR for just under a £100.

Please remember with many modern dash cameras, they all use a particular type of 32/64/128gb Micro card, not the standard type, the model I mentioned is such a camera.

Had me confused as there was nothing in the manual that stated the use of this type of card but are widely available.

I have had my one mounted for just over a year with no issues and is really easy to set up.

Just remember with DCs, pay peanuts and you really really will get blurred gibberish, no good in an accident.

I've had Thinkware dashcams for many years - as above, they don't reduce premiums or protect against increases after non-fault incidents, but, they're unobtrusive if installed correctly and the high quality recordings do however, go towards proving it was the other party at fault (especially with park recording when the pr!ck next door drags his car across your rear bumper then waits until you ask him if he was aware of the damage he'd caused to look all surprised about it...) The reduction in stress due to having incidents recorded is well worth the investment IMO, you need something of recording registration plates of a moving vehicle at low light - so the cheaper cameras are nothing more than a placebo at best at the time you need them to perform in worst-case scenarios.

One thing I've never understood - why do some have tiny screens? they only serve as a distraction whilst driving (to 'see' what you can see through the windscreen or rear view mirror, only in a much reduced resolution) and if you need to review the recording, then use a PC or wireless connection to your phone.

To me the tiny screen is just for setting it up or making sure it is pointing in the right direction no point half of the image being your bonnet.

I don't disagree with you but the BIB, while it is important it's only so if some scroat smacks into a car and sods off, day or night. In an accident usually all vehicles are available, REG' Numbers can be ascertained, dash cam footage as to fault will come into its own, not if it captured a REG' number, imo anyway.

Dash Cams are not for near misses, that's for entertainment, you swear, curse, sh*t yourself but above all thank your lucky stars that the ba*tard ***t of a driver missed you.

Dash Cam should be viewed and used as intended, to clarify fault in the event of an accident.

Get a rear cam as well. It can/will show the idiots approaching from the rear (speeding, swerving, etc), before they overtake dangerously) and log the tailgaters, too.

My own is an eBay / Amazon "mirror" cam / front and rear. Was around £90 I think.

Tbh a POS! The clock has a mind of it's own which means in the event of an accident the time/date stamp could be wrong. Then you can't have the G sensor at anything but the minimum setting or it messes with the rear camera picture! If you adjust your "mirror" (that doubles as the front/rear viewing screen), for a different driver, the camera points to a different place and needs readjusting.

Worst of all you lose the ability to "dip" your mirror. Awful at might with someone right up your backside.

I will very likely get another 622GW package.

I had a little Nextbase cam in my old work van and I found it very fiddly to use and when I did need it it hadn't recorded the accident! It got before and after but was missing about an hour
It was a few years ago and it was the cheapest one but it should still have worked.
I'm definitely thinking of getting a new one though as last December I got hit and run by a tosser in a BMW and didn't get his number. I now have a fault accident on my records
Again I was in a works van.

As per gaz1 says wagons have cctv

Now London Buses have upwards of 13 cams recording 24/7 plus 2 in the cab 1 looking at the driver but takes in a view
of the cab window done for safety reasons!! + 1 cam pointed directly at the drivers feet !
Also microphones to record speach again for safety, well that was what was told to the drivers....

how many of you have changed your memory card

hard drives have changed with the use of ssd and nvme cards so there units are alot smaller

the best way to save something has always been with a hard drive

taxis use cctv same with the wagons and same with the buses
