I think that I have hidden the ugly welds so well that the welding police will never find them!
The welding police are traditionally very tall, thin people - nowhere is safe!

Absolutely. I did have a piece of heat insulation wedged in between the damper and the flue, but at some point it fell out. I was knackered and just wanted to finish the job so I never put it back. Fortunately the fix worked and I did not blow any holes in the flue.Good work - very ingenious
You must have been worried that you had as much chance of welding the damper to the flue as you had to the lever, no?
It was indeed a backhanded compliment. I'm actually in awe that you managed to do it at all. Asking for pretty welds on top would be completely extracting the liquid waste product!Thanks- I think. The main problem was seeing how much stick out I had. The crappy spot welds are from too long stick out. Once I figured that all out, I moved in closer and got good solid welds. I tested the disc by holding it and turning the handle- the handle would have broken off before the disk would have come loose.
It is really tough welding holding on to a stick with the torch 5' up in the air.
If I ever do something like this again, I will definitely get a HD webcam in the chimney so that I can really see where the tip of the electrode hits. The 10 year old webcam that I used just did not have enough resolution to see what was going on and I was not going to leave my mobile phone on the selfie stick up there while welding.
In any case, the result is ugly- I know that, but I am confident that the welds are solid. Thanks for taking the time to have a look at my project!
Rgds,
Peter
