Dad's tool's

I was looking for my box of allen keys today, I didn't find them but opened some biscuit tins that came from my dads and found these

There's also a tobacco tin with "Balls" scratched on it, I'm not opening that one until I've had a couple of beers

My Dad's been gone 30 years now, but I still feel a bit guilty when I use the odd thing that was his. Nearly all of it whas well out of date, but still have a few bits & pieces. I don't know whether the guilty feeling was due to his attitude towards me using his stuff, he was very possessive about things like that & I always had to grab it while he wasn't around.

I know what you mean, my dad wasn't to strict about me using his tools however I could see the pain on his face when I wrecked something he cherished! He didn't like me working in the workshop when he was about but he worked shifts so I had plenty of time. Fortunately I didn't wreck too much and he would occasionally catch me swearing at a bit of old mini, midget or TVR suspension or similar and show me the easy way to do it. He liked me to struggle a bit first.

I found a plastic tub full of his end mills that have joined my others, in the tub I also found these in the same tub, I'm guessing they are a stepped drill for a specific purpose?

I have a couple of my dad's tools, he passed when I was 10 years old. He had always been a keen woodworker, so they are mostly items like planes and spokeshaves. Despite my young age, with guidance, dad always let me have a go with whatever tool he was using at the time when he was making or mending.

Many years later I got the weirdest feeling when I was helping my (not enthusiastic about practical stuff) son install a new kitchen at his flat. While I was getting him to cut some sheet material, I was telling him "use the full stroke, don't push, let the saw do the work" and realised that belatedly I had become my dad.

I wish I could have got some of my granddads tools, he was a master ship maker and worked on the boats in margate and ramsgate, from all accounts he was amazing with an Adze, unfortually they were all lost before anyone could claim them. (he died when i was about 18months old) would have been over 100 now...

They look like someone took spade drill inserts and fitted them into some modified taper shank drill bits, though I don't see and evidence of a solder line.

My Dad died two years ago. He was primarily a woodworker & had a lot of good tools. I use them often, the big firmer chisel he dropped & stuck in his thigh when i was 5, the paring chisel that i remember as being long now ground & sharpened until its barely a stub plus more. They all tell a story.
When i work with my son in the shed i make a point of telling where each tool we use came from, A drawknife from a friends dad, a Marking gauge from another friend whose Grandad used it to build Thames barges.
One of my favorites is a Steel block from my Dads that i use as a minature anvil or dolly. It is actually a slide valve guide block from an N7 steam locomotive (Tank engine) Grandad used to drive that same engine on the LNER during the blitz. When she was being scrapped at Stratford in 1956 he picked it up as a souvenir.

sometimes its better to leave them alone in a corner and try not to use them then at other times your glad of them being there as you havent got them or there better than your cheap brand you payed for

best thing is when you use them you remember your dad used them and looked after them so you tend to do the same with them

ive got some of them hell i havent gone through most of them yet but i have to share some with brother of mine

on another note daughters not interested other than selling them when im gone

I'm still trying to work out why my granddad had a box full of whitworth and a/f spanners when the only car he ever owned was a Renault..... I'm assuming they might be my great granddads.

My grandad died in the 70's, he loads of tools in his cellar. Most of them unused, he wasn't very hands on. My dad got them all, some we have no idea what they were for. We think some were to do with petrol pumps as he ran the Esso fuel stations in and around Glasgow. My brothers and I now have the useful tools.

I sympathise, my father has had several strokes and is being cared for at home, but yesterday he had to dive back into James Cook hospital after a seizure. He's in his mid 80s and has had a hard industrial life working in factories full of lead, asbestos and hot metal and he used to smoke 40 Park Drive a day so he's on borrowed time. He's as tough as old boots though, it looks like he will be home again soon, probably tomorrow.

Most of his stuff I will keep, not just for sentimental reasons, it is good stuff. However I will probably move the casting he got 30 years ago to make a Simplex steam loco on, I will never make it and my father did no machining, all he did was use it as an excuse to buy a Myford ML7

i have a set of 6inch gauge simplex castings il never build it either probably sell em, I think they were cast by norman spink

Sorry to hear that mate. Right now you have to do the coping. It isn't easy especially at first but when you've come to terms with the fact that he's gone and a bit of time passes that's when the tools will make a fond reminder. I have a box of spanners that aren't really worth anything so I take the odd one and use it at work, and using them makes me feel good.

My old man is still with us and driving mum to distraction; one of the things he 'inherited' when his FIL died was some woodworking tools and a rare mixture of screws, nuts etc all in Golden Virginia baccy tins, one of which is marked 'Balls'. Inside it has several dozen 1/4" ball bearings embedded in a layer of claggy grease.

My old man is still with us and driving mum to distraction; one of the things he 'inherited' when his FIL died was some woodworking tools and a rare mixture of screws, nuts etc all in Golden Virginia baccy tins, one of which is marked 'Balls'. Inside it has several dozen 1/4" ball bearings embedded in a layer of claggy grease.

I inherited loads of Three Nuns pipe tobacco tins from my dad, he used a white fabric tape with black felt tip marker to identify the contents.

I did open the tin and it was ball bearings, for a minute I was wondering if somebody had offended him in the past and is now singing soprano
