I have a 180amp Cytringan Bantan 'Oil Cooled' welder, serial number 8616. Is there any way I can get the approximate date it was manufactured ? If it was a Norton motorccyle I could go the Norton Owners club and give them a serial number and they could tell me when the bike was made, whether it was Jim or Alf on shift that day and whether it used a left handed 1/4" BSW wigglepin bolt, there isn't unfortunately a Cytringan Owners club so I'm a bit stuck...
I have no history of the machine itself and I'd like to know about the oil that's in it. I suspect that it was initially filled with oil but have no ideas whether the oil is still original or has been changed or even worse still, replaced with PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl). The oil is pretty disgusting, there was a lot of sludge in the bottom of the tank but no water. It's a fairly dark brown (new engine oil coloured) so I will be replacing it and that creates a problem for disposal - I can get rid of the oil fairly easily if it's oil, if it's PCB it's going to be troublesome.
Has anybody any experience of testing for PCB and subsequent disposal ? I can send a sample off and get it checked but can't find anybody who will take the stuff away if it's PCB.
