Cylinder ram rechroming?

I’ve seeen this done in the aerospace refurb sector, they always remove chrome first, dress the job, re chrome, then grind to toleranc, leaving a factory spec part

im guessing it will be quite expensive

I used to have a client whose entire business was electroplating worn parts for the aerospace sector... Based on the costs they were incurring on chemicals and effluent treatment alone, they must have been charging a bloody fortune.

There again, you wouldn't want to fly in an aeroplane where they'd cheaped out on repairing the landing gear and the hydraulics that move the various control surfaces would you?

Speak to a good hydraulic cylinder firm. They'll make one far cheaper than rechroming

Well look at that price GB quoted for that mixer shaft, AM Philpot did it for ⅓ of the price.

Is it really chromed ?

I'd suspect most plant cylinders are just a corrosion resisting steel with good wear properties.

I've just had some cylinders rebuilt which include chroming, but new items are newly £20K each and rather specialist.

A lot of cylinder rods are chromed EN8... Top end quarry and heavy machine cylinder rods are hardened 4140 and then chromed i believe

Local cylindrical grinders in sheffield did my drummond lathe spindle. They didn't do the plating though, they sent it to somewhere in Nottingham.
They ground it to remove the wear and make it round, hard chromed to over size, then ground it again to make it a perfect fit in the headstock bore.
£60!
I think they just wanted to help me

But, shows it's worth approaching a grinding company rather than the chromers direct. They give alot if work to the platers so get better rates.

Hydraulic chrome is different to decorative chrome. Cant see a repair on this being viable, there must be rod available somewhere, pretty sure a morning on the phone would find some.

Completely viable but completely cost unviable
I buy my chrome rod from these lot
For 30mm and under rods of any length I prefer en16
Most customers would pay for induction hardened
Glad to be out of it

Unless its something special a replacement arm or complete cylinder is going to be much cheaper

This is a farmer.
He'll just buy a new machine for £50k rather than spend £500 on a part!!

To be fair, he's usually pretty good, he's been onto the dealer but it's got a long lead time and he wants to use the machine..

I don't even know what it's on, I'll have a look at it over the weekend

Standard medium duty cylinders are cheap.
I bought an off the shelf ram last week, 50mm rod, 100mm bore, 700mm stroke, with fixed eyes each end.
£320 +VAT

I've had pitted motorcycle forks rechromed and then ground back to the original size a few times in the past. Last time, however, the chromer said the actual amount the engineer charged to grind was now so expensive that he suggested I price up new fork legs instead. He was right - genuine (Honda) fork legs were actually quite a bit cheaper. So while viable for something rare not always the cheapest option

This really isn't the correct farming way. You lot seem to have more money than sense.

Proper way is to weld it up, grind an sand to shape best you can, fill any imperfections with JB weld or whatever, polish and reinstall.

Might leak a bit, but a farmer will be happy with that, and topping up the oil once in a while.

Alternatively, there is a company near me, who repair rams, and have stock or chromed rod. They cut the eye off the old one and machine the piston end to suit. No idea how much it costs though.
