Cylinder head bolt torque confusion.

I have done a couple of these before, and this time actually read the book and paid attention and for the first time noticed the hammer image, though I think last time someone told me the figures.
Do I take it as torque bolt tap with hammer, torque bolt tap with hammer. torque bolt tap with hammer, then 90 degrees and done? or as the arrows show under each bolt loosen between stages and then retighten to the next higher torque figure? But then what does stage 4 image represent?
SCANIA dc16 engine.
Before anyone suggests to ring the dealer you are more than welcome to try, but they are all as unhelpful as can be, buying parts off them can be a challenge!

Think that's the number of times you can resuse them before replacing.

That actually makes sense, that you can reuse them three times.

I still wonder what the hammer means?

The diagram above I interpret (maybe) as bin the old bolt, mark the new bolt after each stage? #4 is perhaps install lock wire?

No clue as to what the arrows underneath imply, maybe refer to the diagram below each time ?

Actually. There's a punch under the hammer. It's a marker to mark number of times used that's all. Use three times (three dots) then bin and replace.

Arrows are screw in, screw out.

I interpret it as mark the bolts when tight with a punch.

If they have been used three times then bin them.

I think it's a dustbin in 4 not lockwire.

If its a dealer workshop manual then its a given that you understand the symbols...something like say a Haynes its more geared for home use and the hobbiest spanner swinger.
