So for a few years now I’ve been without the coolant pump on the CVA because it would trip the overload after a couple of minutes of use, I assumed it was something faulty with the overload and then the reset switch broke and I’ve only recently got around to replacing it and cleaning out the horrendous mess in the coolant tank that accrued from a lack of circulation.
So I thought with the overload replaced the pump would work flawlessly, but it still trips. Looking closer I realise now that the motor that’s been fitted by the previous owner is an American one and 60hz, not our 50hz. I know that running a 60hz motor on 50hz will make it run slightly slower, but does it have an appreciable effect on the current draw?
The current overload is the same as was fitted on it, a 1.7A - 2.4A, from what I can understand on the motor plate the overload should be set around 1.9A for when it’s running on 240v. Checking with a clamp meter it appears to be drawing a steady 3.4A, so my question is would there be any catastrophic consequences from fitting a higher rated overload? The pump won’t be run for hours on end but only a few minutes here and there, I could live with the tripping but it’s more of a case that it’s a pain when it cuts out in the middle of a cut.
