Can anyone recommend a relatively cheap CV boot tool? I have one to replace when doing the lower suspension arms on the D3 and figure its about time I invested in one. Ideally around/less than £25 or something like that for DIY use please if anything decent can be had for that price.

If you're not using stretchy boots, then you don't need a tool, as a standard boot won't stretch.
Personally, I wouldn't fit stretchy boots (or cheap rubber aftermarket) on anything I was planning on keeping for more than 12 months, as they just perish.

Normally knock the joint off with a copper hammer, sometimes they can be a bit of a bar steward , in over 55 years in the motor trade I have only had 2 that I couldn’t get off even using the CV joint removal tool
Ok. Thanks. Will anything fall off/apart/all over the dusty workshop floor as I do that? Then I presume new boot, reassemble joint, fill (how much?) with fresh grease and reassemble to the vehicle?
Do I need to mark orientation at all?

If you haven't done one before its not the nicest of jobs, a bit of suspension stuff to remove before you can get the shaft out and it will all be big/rusty/tight on a D3 I should imagine

CV joint stuck!!
I'm changing the OSF cv joint of swimbos 2015 Mazda 2. Had a problem undoing the axle nut but managed with a 6 foot pipe and a LOT of pressure to undo it. Finally got the cv joint pushed out of the hub and then... can';t get it off the driveshaft. Spent over an hour trying just about...

Well, the only advantage here is that i am changing the lower arms so it will pretty much be off the vehicle anyway. I only noticed it when i had the wheels off doing the upper arms (which is when i realised they were fine and the lower ones were shot!)What could possibly go wrong!

I've got one of those - removes CV effortlessly
Just looked up how they work - looks very gentle. I have ordered one. Presumably reassembly is to gently tap it back together?

I had a D3, I did both front CV joints, can't remember it being particularly difficult, if jobs are a PITA, they usually stick in my head!
Just split the CV joint from the shaft and slide the new boot on. I usually cut off the old boot before I start but you are then kinda committed to finishing it

You're taking it out so it's fine.
I wasn't intending on removing the halfshaft / CV but it happened. Could I get it back in with the hub attached etc., could I ****! Even made jigs to hold it in place and smack with sledge hammers, bottle jack's off the wall etc. Would not go back in.
Anyway whole hub stripped down, sandblasted and painted, rebuilt. Got the halfshaft from the bin bag, right ya ****er time to get you in. Lined up the splines into the diff, slid it back a little to engage, you absolute **** pot and various other words emerged. The damn thing slid straight in and clipped into place with no effort at all.

Whatever you do don't look back a couple of months on this forum to my attempts on the wife's Mazda 2 OSF CV joint....aaaarrrrgggghhhh!! I also bought one of those 'removal tools' no chance had to cut the CV off with disc cutter ...but I'm not trying to put you off
I just had it in a bucket of hot water before and used grease on the cone. It was draper I think, not expensive.I have a finger expander that goes on the airline, and last time I screwed up and ordered oem style boots instead of a stretchy one, and it couldnt expand it even after warming.
I ended up disassembling the cv for expediencey, and fitting it, when the internal clip bent putting it back in, and nobody would sell me a clip or joint kit locally and I ended up buying a complete half shaft.
I must get some spare stretchy boots in ready for next time...
