Cutting compound is certainly a good additive for threading etc, but I find a drop or two of engine oil from the oil can equally as good. Just wondering about a cutting compound I saw some years ago, "Eazicut, cuts 10 times faster requiring half the effort" Would this do what they say and if so why?

i use rocol rtd cutting compound on most things. drilling tapping hand sawing mainly on steel thats over 1/16th thick. it cuts twice as fast reduces heat and friction gives a good surface finish flows in to the cut doubles tool life
one of my 4 inch belt sanders was all cut by hand 6inch channel and all the fittings cut and filed a good project for someone starting metal;work before moving on to machinery all cut with rocol

Really?? How the devil does it work? I imagined it would just clog up blades, files etc with metal grit.

rocols the best but expensive u can get trefolex or halls cutting compound mollyslip templers
look up cromwell tools catalogue engineers suplies theres everything engineering wise u ever need and the prices are decent the compound starts from 6 quid a tin well worth having

Because the made up cutting lubricant is far thinner than the engine oil you use , it washes the swarf / filings off the surface rather than holding them and making for an abrasive gunge that actually stops the tool cutting edges from contacting the clean metal and allowing it to cut the very same.
The engine oil is actually designed to keep surfaces apart and stop / reduce wear. Mechanically cutting metal is a form of extreme & hopefully controlled wear.
If you want to clean some cruddy files soak them in cutting fluid for a few hours and then get to work with a bit of tin plate along the lines of the cutting teeth , use a file card only for bigger files , say over 1/2 inch wide .
