Cutting 20 or 25mm steel plate

I've got this and I'd like to take the collar off it for various reasons.


The collar looks like this, 20mm or 25mm thick


I've a got a 115mm grinder and can borrow a 230mm one. Would a handheld metal cutting circular saw manage it, Evolution do one? I could get oxy-acetylene but that would be a hassle. I don't know anyone locally with a plasma cutter.

Any other options or suggestions?

I guess it's how much you value the end product bearing in mind the wood under the steel will be stained red to an inch of its life. If time is not an issue and its worth more than at least ten 1mm cutting discs then its sit down and start cutting with the earbuds in

9" grinder will do it no problems. And surprisingly quickly once you get going

Looks remote? Do you have power where it is?
Plasma may be quickest if you can borrow one.

How was the steel collar originally attached? It may have a weak point/weld that can be split.

A good cordless angry grinder with a slitting disc will eat that.

Which part is the keeper? The wood or the iron?

First thing I'd do is really dry it out. Stick it indoors in the warm for a few months and if it's not restrained, the collar might even tap off.

Then looksee if there is any sign of a fixing. With any luck it will be a taper lock and as soon as it starts to move, it slides off easily...

115mm angle grinder with a 1mm disc will do that no problem.

240 volt will be better if you can power it

I agree with petrol saw. If that is a fender off a pier/ jetty the wood will be pitch pine, it is excellent firewood. I used to cut them up for frewood with a chansaw for my grandad.

It's not far from the electric, that's my front garden. The collar is is about 1200 long and goes round all four sides, The sides have been rebated so the plate is flush. The timber, greenheart* I think, will be used for terracing and the steel will either be weighed in or used. One of the reason I want to remove the collar is it'll make it easier to move the timber when I want to. Time I have plenty of.

*Be aware of greenheart splinters, they are almost certain to become septic if ignored.

Looks like it was hammered in so if you dry the wood, it should hammer out. Have you checked for any fixings?

If you ever have to lift some you will remember it, densest stuff I have ever seen. Hard to work as well. Any pier work locally tends to use it, friend got a new bit a few months back.

@cheb I'm down the road just now but our plasma cutter wouldn't do much to that, max is 10mm cut I'm afraid. I'd use the 9" grinder with ear protection out of your list of options.

I've another better chunk of greenheart too so I know how heavy it is. Horrible on tools, lots of silica in it IIRC. It's one of those odd woods that sink in water.

Looks like I'll be giving the grinder a workout.

I've never heard of greenheart timber.

I used to have a salmon rod made of the stuff, sold it on when the 'fishing bug' wore off me.

I think you chaps have just solved the mystery of what I made my bed out of. It was timber from an old jetty desting for a bonfire unless I had a use for it. Roof timbers for my shed and left overs made me bed. It was a terrible day lifting the timbers for the roof, 4.5m long 60x250 ish mm.
