cut off saws

i`m looking for a cut off saw purely for cutting steel (mainly tube).seen the one in argos and presume it uses cutting discs with not much life time,so i`ll be constantly changing discs.And i`ve seen the evolution fury that will apparently cut anything,but cant really see these metal discs lasting too long when cutting tube regulary.Has anyone got one of these or similar product to give me a bit of feedback or advise

Someone posted comparisons of the quality of the cut recently. As you'd guess, the non-abrasive solution was far, far, cleaner. A search should find it.

An abrasive cut off saw with a 14" blade will cut for ages before you need a new blade and if you look round you can find cheap blade suppliers. I've cut 50x50x3mm wall tubing with mine and used it to cut scaffold tubing and a £4 blade has lasted weeks.

I got the Evolution Fury when Aldi had them in as one of their 'specials'. I'm not a pro or particularly experienced but have to say I'm very impressed with it. Virtually no sparks and from what I've seen of an abrasive wheel (i.e. the one at the college where I did my welding class so presumably a decent piece of kit) it's a hell of a lot quicker. The cuts are clean and there's no need for cleaning up or deburring. Not had it long and used it overmuch but I haven't noticed any appreciable blunting or dulling of the blade. I think I read somewhere that each blade could make a thousand cuts in inch square box section and I don't think I have seen anything from mine to dispute that.

with a 14" blade i got a bout 110 cuts of 2 " tube wen i was fabricating a hand rail :P

You must be pressing on too hard, if I let it go at it's own pace my blades last ages. Don't get Machine Mart blades they are rubbish and some are so far out of balance they are scary, Screwfix ones are good and our local metal supplier has some decent ones for stainless which are the ones I get.

Interestingly I have a 14" abrasive chop saw. I couldn't get the screwfix blades to balance, the thing was scary! I found the Machine Mart blades much better. I suppose its all cheap stuff in the end and could well be down to dodgy batches in either case.

The machine was from Screwfix and the original blade that was fitted to the machine was fine. Their (Screwfix) replacements were no good though in my experience.

Just a quick bit of info for anybody thinking of buying the 14" Evolution chop saw, spend a few bob on ear plugs or muffs, Oh' yeh, also buy some for the folks next door and the folks next door to them, I think by now you will have figured out that they are really LOUD !!

As Gordon said, the TCT cut off saws are about the loudest method of cutting metal there is!

Not used one of the multipurpose types but in the case of metal specific saws... blades are relatively fragile and pricey but used properly they last well, can resharpened a few times and you can have teeth replaced too if you knock any off. The standard blades REALLY don't like stainless.

On the upside, significantly faster cut than abrasive, cutting capacity is not lost as the blade wears, cuts are relatively cold, a lot more accurate and burr free than an abrasive. Not a huge amount in it with regards to mess- dust everywhere with an abrasive versus tiny slivers everwhere with a TCT

I looked at both TCT and abrasive chop saws, and ended up buying a bandsaw...

I'm happy with it, nice quiet cutting, good blade longevity. It's not super-fast but that's not a problem, I just set it going and get on with something else.
