Hi,

it sounds like you over-stressed the components that blew and it was only when you needed the extra current, ie, for the brass, that they finally failed.

Maybe 3 minutes cooling down wasn't enough?

It's tricky to say exactly what it was that caused it but generally all of the adverts for the 40A plasmas suggest 12 mm maximum cut.

I'd not mention what I'd been cutting if I was you!

I can't believe you guys. The cutter shouldn't break under any circumstances, it should just fail to cut thicker than it's capable of. If it's overheated, it shouldn't start till it's cooled down. If it can't cut with the tip to the metal, it won't. It still shouldn't break! The only reason it will break is cos it's cheap shoddy ****e. It is not a user error problem!

never said resting the tip on the workpiece would break it, just that i wasn't sure if you should or not :whistle:

Mine is working really well and can cut 5mm-7mm steel like butter
Takes abit longer with 9mm-10mm but still all good

Hi,

sorry Drains I have to disagree on one point...

anything will break if you force it above the manufacturers maximum spec.

These 40A cutters are rated to cut 12mm max. 25mm is over-stressing the components.

Factor of safety/margin for user error about 2:1, sounds about right to me.

Break!

I bought the plama with details of : 'Ideal for all types of cutting- cuts ferrous and non-ferrous metals up to 15mm without effort, and is capable of severing metal 25mm thick. Cuts like a knife through butter.' !!!!!!!!!!!!! Well thats what he said, not me. I believe the machine was capable of 15mm as we cut 14 mm into a 20mm piece of flat stock. Operator error ????? That's why there is a OC shut off , otherwise I was very impressed with the little cutter. I have sent the broken one back and explained in nice words that Trading Standards, PayPal and CE will be informed if things were not put right!
I am now recieving a new machine with extra anncilaries, tested by himself (wow). Very odd that consumer pressure works now and again! :cool:

Do you not think that a polite request for a replacement would have had the same effect? Why did you feel the need to lay down the law, did they get funny when you contacted them? :dontknow:

Did not answer to a resolution on telephone or internet? When persuaded with the LAW I got a result! To a lot of people £279 isn't a lot of money, too my familey, it's a Months food!

Peter. If you try to cut 25mm on that machine, it should cut a cruddy groove and throw dross everywhere, and mess up the tip. At worst, you'd destroy the torch. The machine should not be affected.

The components are not being overstressed. It's the same as me trying to throw a ball half a mile. I can't. It won't break my arm though!

My plasma cutter definitely draws more current on thicker steel. So it should be stressed more. I doubt these low-end machines have much of an over current limit.

Mine is just a transformer-based one with no current dial

New cutter and more ancillaries. Good service. Oh, and he wrote tested on the box? Have not tried it out yet but I have learn't a lesson.
