Cut 40 guide arrangements....

Got a rather woebegone Cut 40 here, and would really rather like to sort out some guide system for the thing, as I'm sure that it could do a very great deal better than it does....
All thoughts on improving the machines capabilities and envelope of effectiveness would be welcome.
Ideal spacing of the nozzle to the workpiece ?
Amperage settings ?
Recommended reading ?

I have a 12mm thick bit of bar i run mine down once I clamp it down, has worked well for me just slow down the travel speed the thicker it gets

Do you have the set of training wheels that go on the cup ?
Helps hold the gap steady.
