Custom Crimp Jaws

I want to make a set of custom jaws for a particular copper ferrule. Aim is to put them in this cheap Hilka set. (Bought in desperation once when I temporarily lost my go to "red, yellow,blue" ones. Absolute rubbish and then some. Need to sort the slippery handles too).

I can draw what I want in CAD but will then need to find someone to laser cut them. Would get away with 6mm but 12mm would be better. MS, stainless, whatever.

Can you not buy the jaws you need? You used to be able to buy lots of different jaws to fit that style tool.

The ones you show are for three different sizes.

If you only want one particular size of one particular style of ferrule, it might make it easier to make or cheaper to make if the ferrule enters the jaws 'end on' rather than 'side on' as current (that way, it might be a machined item rather than a lasered item).

If you do not mind waiting, there is a company called 'Model Engineer's Laser' who would accommodate an on-off for Oneoff. Two pieces of 6mm would likely get them to you quicker than 12mm.

Upload a picture of the shape you want and we can come up with other ideas.

Depending on the price of the laser cutting you may want to look at the cheap hydraulic crimpers. Under £40 gets lots of sizes.
I'd link to the one I found on Amazon just now for£39 but tech incompetence isn't letting me copy the URL.

Thanks. I've taken a punt on a set of jaws off of Ebay that may do what I want.

Will hopefully fit one of the 3 ratchet crimpers I have.

Nothing special, A10 esque crimp but I want a smaller tool than below for getting in tight spaces and so the crimping action is right at the very tip of the tool:

You might be wise to do some rough calculations on the leverage ratio of the two tools. Work out how much a 'standard handle squeeze' applies (or by how much it is amplified) at the crimp point.

The second ones, for the larger crimp, have longer handles than the first one. The larger CSA crimps are nearer the fulcrum than the smaller CSA.

Using a set of crimps with shorter handles and putting a large CSA at the tip of the jaws might not give enough squeeze or require forearms like Popeye.

Buy a cheap version of the second one and remove the excess jawage with a grinder.

so its not critical on the crimping pressure i take it

yea that was fiested upon all electricians about 15 years ago along with having to buy a torque wrench at over 120 quid for tightening up meter tails and mcb.s on the db . fortunately they never enforced it

all the tests i did and all inspections each year the inspector never asked to see them best laugh is tighten them with a torque wrench give the cables a bit of a rogering after and they still need tightening. ive never had any come loose in 50 odd years

I've never had any cables come loose either, in the 40-odd years that I've been tinkering with electrics.
