Cross hole countersink

Does anyone use these are they any good on steel? Am I calling them the right thing or are they called something different? I am tired of the normal countersink bits I use, they seem to be becoming poorer quality everytime I buy a new one. I use them more to chamfer drilled holes than to actually countersink.

Depends what make of countersink your using..I use them on steel with some cutting fluid and never had a problem. I use Clarke ones and a couple of other brands I can't remember the name..

I've been using reisser ones which I always thought were good but last couple I've got just didn't last. I seen a guy on YouTube using those cross hole ones and they seemed to cut very well.

Are those the ones which are smooth conical affairs with a hole in the side? Been wondering if those are any good myself.

If you're just using them for lightly chamfering, is a centre drill not feasible?

Fluteless countersink is the more common term & i believe they're also known as Weldon countersinks although that might be a hoover vs vacuum cleaner type deal? As said brand/quality is a bigger deal... http://www.alpen-drills.com/en/product-range/countersinks-35/ are good quality and value, i bought a couple of their regular 8.3mm 3 flute HSS (second one down in the link) earlier this year to countersink 400 odd lasercut holes in 304L. Could have done it with just one of them
Personally i prefer regular fluted countersinks as they're relatively easy to sharpen if an edge gets dinked

Mostly on pillar drill but occasionally in a battery drill

bit quality is the key...

alpen are good, i have a set of cobalt drills and a few countersinks (solid carbide so cant comment on hss) same firm as guhring i understand....

We have a Ruko set at work and they are proving good value too (£35 for a set of 5/6 from MSC iirc)

It is the ruko set I'm thinking of getting, never used Alpen stuff before but it look good quality

I use the fluteless countersink, one lives in a battery drill and is used to break almost all holes I drill.
I haven't used a fluted countersink for years.
