Crimping tool

Has anyone got any views on this type of crimping tool:

A lot cheaper than the normal type, but will it do the same job?

Hello Matt,

possibly for an occasional job but if you are regularly doing crimps I would say no. Also if you are on a job, say wiring a motor, you fit the cable into the gland box, set the tails and trim to length then crimp the lug on. I don't think this would be any use?
Ok for the occasional crimp in the workshop.

Quite like that tool but as said, it would only be of use for crimping on the bench, not in situ.

Well that settles that then- I should of thought about the in situ problem. I want it for crimping lugs onto cables inside an air cooled welder, so totally useless. Thanks guys, twenty quid saved.

Ill just have to save up for the normal type...

Just bare in mind, crimp tools for crimping that size of cable are very expensive, and require a fair bit of room to operate. I must say the Nut splitter idea would work very well is such confined spaces

Re the crimp device that's small and portable ..
Hmmm let me see if I can get it typed right .

I had an idea few moments ago .....


Using some 3/4 inch square bar or similar make up a pair of box joint type parallel jaw pliers and at the business end make a cup and anvil to suit the crimp .

Have a decent fulcrum lever length , use a high tensile threaded bar with high tensile nuts on it to squeeze the pliers onto the crimp by making eyes in the bar at the opposite end to the cup and anvil.

The cup could be a drilled out nut , cut in half then welded in place.

The anvil could be a large masonry nail head set in an interference fit hole with small washers or a tube on the nail body to set the height /depth of the indent .

You could even be posh and make the cup half nut set up so it is welded on a screw thread so you can change the cup size for differing ferrule sizes and have a set of ground down masonry nails to suit the cup/ferrule relationship for the best finished crimped ferrule .....Or make a set of better bespoke screw in cups in some flat bar & make the anvils out of a high tensile bolt such as a Hilti / rawl type bolt ground to suit things .

At work we use large hydraulic crimpers and they need to be calibrated every year.

If it's just for a one off job I'm sure you can hire a set?

I've owned one for about 20 years now and use it at least twice a week on 25 mm to 95 mm cable. Having used both type I prefer the hammer type to the bolt cropper style. Just be careful not to over crimp the cable lug.

Snap-on and Mac charge about 65.00/70.00 GBP's for the exact same tool, so this ones a bargain.

I have a cheap hydraulic one I got off the bay. It does 10mm to 120mm CSA & can do smaller than 10mm if you dont mind one side being flat & not hex.

If any one local wants to use it give me a shout. Not worth sending it as the two way cost would nearly be what one costs.

Do you have a City Electrical Factors (CEF) near you?

They will hire out decent tools for very little.
Quality crimpers, such as Cembre, are very expensive to buy but do a perfect job.

If you only need to go to 16mm CSA then ratchet crimps on Ebay can be had for about £14-19 delivered. If you need 35mm TLC Direct do some, also ratchet type. If it is for very big stuff you tend to pay £35-65 on Ebay (not seen many since "2008-ended").

Borrowing from CEF is fine, get the matching crimps for the tool; for example Klauke crimpers require Klauke crimps or they tend to under crimp. The purpose of a crimp is to create a cold weld, calibration or at least a good test pull is useful and really important if this is for an unattended boat with LPG around.

If you want pre-made you might find someone on Ebay offering the service, make sure you heatshrink the tube lugs because corrosion can get in.

The double-hex crimpers have a finite life. You can pick up cheap-n-cheerful hydraulic crimpers from China for about £35-45, BUT they tend not to do great crimps. Ok for repairs although TBH I would just hire a proper crimper.
