cressex??? fly press

hi got hold of a screw /fly press it has cressex written on it or maybe gressex ?
never heard of them cant find anything anywhere lol, has a 1" shaft for tooling to go into , adjustable height etc is there a tool site like lathes.co.uk or anyone have any info on ethem?

hi, stick a few pics up and give us a look, i have made a good few tools for my flys over the years, from proper machined tooling down to pieces welded onto heavy channel.

The fly press is a very underrated tool, with a little bit of thought and iniative you can make very simple tooling to do a multitude of tasks, no general fab shop should be without one.

only a madman or a fool would underate a fly press, and when you get in underage half minimum wage cheap as chips labour your hardly going to have them at your £60,000 press brake anyway heres a couple of mine on special 'pallet truckable' table i madeup, which can be either wheeled up to the van and flys slide into the back on to pallets or wheeled onto a taillift, movability is the big problem with these babys, and some of the tools i have made up over the years.

We have a couple of flys at work Danny, an Edwards No8 and a deep throat which I think is a Norton. Sadly they don't get as much work as they used to but they still come in handy for knocking out pipe saddles and clamps etc.

Hi I love the fly presses most tooling I have is made to do particular jobs - folding - dimples - joggles - pushing bearings, the list goes on and on!!!. they really are the most underrated tool. I wouldnt be without mine. There is often tooling on ebay. I dont often buy any but looking will give you the idea. Happy bumping!!!

had a look, a 10 ton monster fly for sale with proper modern table £550, will have to pass on that today (some of the old tables you get look like they came from the beginnings of the industrail revolution) and some other bits and bobs, anyway have put flypress into regular searches, cheers

I have a little Norton No1 and it's got me out of trouble a few times. It's damn heavy though for such a little thing. Gotta find or make some tooling for it though.

i find the best way to move the lighter fly's is for two men (and i mean men, this is not for the girls) to grab each end of say a metre steel bar, hook it under the troat of the fly and lift, you would want two very large and strong men to do this with a number 4. if i am lifting a 4 i would use 4 men, two each side, and a fifth man to help with the balance is useful.

i have googled it and cant find anything and yes look like a drill stand but was all same colour etc so not sure if its original or not , i painted it black to disguise it as i was given it by a freind who had already given to someone else i know but they not been back for it so said i could take it out of way

Maybe off topic, maybe not, do the numbers/sizes of fly presses relate to the output force at all? And is there a formula for working out the force needed to bend/fold something, or if that more guesswork/trial and error?

not off topic at all, i think a no.4 for example is a 4 ton of force etc, now i could be wrong the last 20 years about this, dont get me wrong,. and there are most certainly formula when it comes to forces etc, which i was taught and have long forgotten so now i use guesswork/trial and error? both are relivent. if you want to bend a bit of flat bar for the top of a railing why would you spend half the day with formula, if your going to build a £40,000 die, better to do your maths.

could be interesting, a fly press is something i`ve recently thought about investing in. I havent the space for a full press brake, or the use to justify it, but I seem to have gain quite a few jobs where clean bends/folds in 1.5-3mm stainess are needed, and even more in ali. After that I can find plenty of things to do with it.


The long vee block`s that i`ve seen in tooling, are they just that, or specially for presses?

Maybe I should start a new thread after all, i`ll leave that to the mods to decide as it`s till almost on topic

The bending tooling I've seen has always been small sections of press-brake tooling.

General-lee - that does look like the base of a drill press that someone has modified as a bearing press. The casting on the base is miles to thin to be purpose-made for pressing against IMO.
