creosote users- what recipe on fresh wood

got some stocks of real creosote and a freshly repaired shed to treat

whats your recipe for fresh wood? straight on with the creosote ? thinned with diesel /mixed with oil or ???

I stick it on as is for fresh wood.
Mix with used engine oil on a recoat.

Not sure the "proper" creosote I've had in the past as been all that good though.

Lash it on. Or if you have something to do it in submerge with weights on top for a day or two. Sorry, just noticed its a shed not planks or posts. Nobody has enough to submerge a shed I guess.

I cant see any point messing around with it, I've mixed with used engine oil in the past, but always thought that was just a way of making it go further for free, although it takes a lot longer to dry.

I also dont think that modern proper creosote is the same as the old stuff, it doesnt even leave burns on your skin, and the smell isnt strong enough.

dont half stink , just used a few brush fulls and i feel like ive bathed in it

will use oil at some stage as A, i need to get rid and B, i cant afford to creosote yearly

1st coat is a soak in second coat can also be a soak in

mixing with oil it depends on how dark you want it a light colour use clean oil a dark colour use used oil

mixing also allows you to do a yearly coat

You can still buy genuine creosote - "professional use only" - I'm not one of them, and experienced no issues in having 100 litres delivered to my home. And yes, dry clean wood soaks up the stuff like most people would beer when it's offered at 20p a pint...

Also, if you have dandruff or eczema, it'll fix that too....

stuff i get burns your skin and if u use it in warm weather the fumes make your face red and makes you feel lousy. i generally put a cup full of black waste engine oil to about 4 gallons of creosote after a week it all soaks in only needs recoating every 3 years even a lot longer our sheds 30 years old and only been done 4 times and is as good as new

I'd say put it on as it comes, and yes, business and agricultural use only. I have an allotment which is agricultural so I put the allotment society as a business name and no problems.
I dont think anyone checks, and when you read up on creosote theres no reason why they should, the evidence is that its really not harmful. (as far as I read)

For fences - especially the bits noone will see I mix half old oil with half creosote... A cup in 4 gallons wont do much will it?!

Having said that - in answer to the OP - unless you want to darken the colour, I would just apply as it is. I just happen to have old engine oil from servicing my cars and it can serve a decent purpose this way.

putting a bit more than a few cupfulls makes it harder to put on and stops oily for months after a few weeks it soaks in leaving a nice mat finish . chuck a bucket of water over it and it just drops off leaving bobbles of water on it
