Creative, Overly Ambitious or Potential Bomb?

Now I know one or two of you here like to recycle certain objects to gain a new lease of life for them whether it be for environmental reasons or just because you're a cheapskate looking for a quick way out.

Is it just me? am I being overly cautions in thinking this is not such a cleaver way of using an old propane bottle... what safety issues could there possibly be! and just how much psi is that pump capable of?

Wouldn't bother me so long as the cylinder was in good nick and there is a pressure relief/safety valve on the cylinder.
I use a 47KG ex-propane cylinder as a mobile air supply, it has a pair of wheels welded to the base, a hook for the airline and I pressurise it on my compressor.
Saves me having to move vehicles with flat tyres to my compressor.

My uncle has one similar but based on a 19kg bottle. Built by his late father in law 30+ years ago. Still going strong now in fact it's been a lifesaver a few times foe me when suffering flat trailer tyres nearby. It's as safe as the day it was made without any pressure cut off switch (it does have a pressure release valve though). Pressure wise their more than strong enough for 100psi that I know of I'm sure they would survive much much more than that.

propane tanks are thicker than most air tanks so theres no problem there

I have never seen a pump quite like that but it seems to have a big low pressure cylinder & then an intermediate cylinder with high pressure cylinder mounted on top tandem style. If you look carefully at the side on photo of the crankcase there is a working max pressure plate four figures 3500psi?
Is it a diving compressor pump? If so that tank might as well be made of bacofoil if the safety valve or unloader sticks shut!

I used a 47kg bottle as an air receiver, attached some fittings and turned it upside down to drain the water out. Took ages to fill from a 25l compressor but lasted long enough to make painting bearable

I think you could be right Keith with a diving compressor, I found this on youtube

as for the tank, even if the person who made it used the correct fill material I doubt they tempered it or had the vessel pressure tested... I mean what could possibly go wrong?
