Yeah - the screws are oversize because of the original holes being knackered.
I think you're (all) correct - remove the hinges, fill in the holes, fit better ones.

dont just fill in the holes make some slightly tapered wooden dowls a dab of wood glue and bang em in cut the excess off and jobs done . no need to move them over
