Cranking Amps

Just a quick query which I'm sure one of you guys can help with.

is it ok to fit a car battery which has a 420 amps cranking when the original battery only has 360 amps cranking?

Its ridiculous now. We just got rid of a 10 year old 3 series BMW that was an electrical pain in the ar%e! I'd would hate to think what a modern one is like.

It will be electrical/electronic faults sending cars to the scrappy these days because they are too difficult / too expensive to sort out.

So there making cars now with alternators that cant self regulate...thats progress for sure

Oh they still self regulate the voltage, however they run the battery as a subsystem so it can be charged both via constant current and constant voltage, depending on the state of charge, rather than just a set voltage to the battery.

They will be reinventing the wheel next. My transit has a so called smart alternator that talks to the ECU, so clever that if the batteries a bit flat it stops charging completely! It knackers the regulator. That's progress for you.

I have a diesel merc in at the moment, and the car is telling the customer it has either a battery or alternator fault but no fault codes,
the car has stood for over a month now the people have gone away and started fine the alternator is charging perfectly and the battery cant be bad as that has just proved itself, the alternator is £400 (water cooled)
and battery £150 so which way do you go ?
he said I dont want it flashing at me saying error, nothing is wrong but something must be !!! some times smart as in charging is not so smart.

My car revs were hunting recently. Took it to the main dealer and the mechanic fixed it by reprogramming the scu, didn't even open the bonnet !!

Well clearly smart alternators are good progress.

The millions of vehicles and machines out there that have bog standard alternators, and even dynamos, simply don't work.

Rev hunting is usually an air leak on the intake between the maf and head? What value did he reprogram?

I don't know, was in the waiting room, he just dealt with the car in the car park with his laptop

I have recently embarked on the slippery slope of car ownership, 99 Octavia 1.9TDi. Not exactly super hitech, it is actually fixable with spanners, most of the time. It does however have a display which gives me current and average fuel consumption. It is fun trying to keep it down, and watching what happens when you floor it. Not really intercontinental ballistic missile acceleration but 0-60 in less than the LT could manage down a very steep hill.

I have a passat 02 130 hp best car i have had for reliability and economy, be careful of the sump if ally, slightest touch and you have a massive hole I know after two sumps, it now has a sump guard. and put the correct oil in engine.A must !! Because the cam works the injectors

Not PD. I was advised against them. Having said that, I did not need advising, a bit too expensive for me anyway.
