crane advice wanted

A cautionary tale, earlier in the year i had a phone call from a friend, "Do you want a laugh, the effing cranes dropped the portacabin on my barn".
Of course i shot up there as you do.
The miracle was nobody was killed or even hurt. Basically the operator lifted the load so high that the hook block hit the sheave box at the top of the jib, the safety stop had been either disabled or switched off. Result was the wire parted & the whole lot came down hit the barn & bounced out sideways, if you look carefully you can see the hole where the block went through the roof as it was bouncing back up.

Tjhere was sea of smashed asbestos & its going to cost a fair ols whack of money to sort out!

It doesn't cost them anything to move one boat while on site to move another, they do nothing all day, time is not money for them, they blocked this boat in after all. Its not like booking a crane where they have to travel, and may be get to another job.

You are right though for £60 he will have to stump up. It is a rip off though. Its a place where they are determined to drive away all their customers by treating them like s**t. 60 quid won't keep them from bankruptcy.

I'm Lancashire born (so I have to dislike and disagree with anyone from Yorkshire on principal) but actually I have to agree with Sardine on this one. They put the other boat there, so they should shift it free-of-charge. I know 60 quid isn't a lot to flash southerners but it's the principal (might as well get another stereotype in )

How much are they charging you to put your boat back in the water, and would it be cheaper for you to hire your own crane to move it instead ? or would they not allow you to do that ?

umm where can u get a crane from for 60 ,quid id rather sit at home and do nothing than work for less and if u didnt like the terms take it somwhere else

If they are only charging him 60 quid to move the other boat and put his back in the water then it's a bargain, if it's 60 quid on top of the cost of putting his back in the water then they are being cheeky. imho.

60 Quid! A trolley jack, a few bits of scaffold and a crow bar and it will be shifted in no time!

Like this do ya mean, I moved this, 20tons by hand, turfers and a few jacks and pipes and a lot of effort through this door to get the crane to it, could then get fork lift to help pull it using the tilt rams

PS was not happy with crane man he didnt turn up with a spreader frame and I voiced my concern over the closeness of the strops on a 70ft boat good job it was a still day, but the shell took it fine.

I remember the smug face on the managers at a boatyard I worked in, they smashed up the slipway on safety grounds to make more money out of the crane and the blocking in trick was a favourite of Coco and Bozo the two crane operators.

I used to book and plan mobile crane lifts in my old job. £60squid, principle or not is a steal... we were charged minimum 8hrs by Hewden, even for a 20min lift, that'll be.......... £800 !!!!

Trouble is 'principal' and 'principle' are both valid words but with different meanings so a spell checker won't catch them - or is that spell chequer?

Yes but in this case the crane is parked 25 metres away, the boatyard owners have to make best use of the space, but if you block others in, you have to accept that you will need to move boats about as needed. Otherwise its just greed isn't it ?

Yes but unfortunately your friend is parked up on there land so it's going to be hard to force the issue, probably better to bite his tongue and pay the money then spend the next few years putting potential customers off using that marina at every opportunity. I know it's a rip off but it's going to be very difficult if he fights it.

I've advised him get banners saying "do not use xxxx marina " in metre high letters down each side of his boat, and see how long before they chuck him out.
