cracked head

this is the head off me boat engine, its a 1934 rj2 thornycroft.

ive had the head of to regrind the valves, also put a new valve in.

the head was cracked when the previous owner bought it, so 20yrs ago he bodged it with plasic padding, so i dug it out and replaced it we some new padding.

out of interest, what do you recon it would cost to have welded up, its cast.

In my opinion , it would depend on time cleaning it , then preheating and what procedure to use , ie arc or brazing ! Sometimes it doesn't weld nicely , lots of porosity and then it could crack again on cooling, I like to see the job first hand to give an estimate ! Does the plastic padding work ?

the plastic padding works a treat (the last lot had been in 20yrs)
theres no water preasure in the water jacket, it just flows in then out, so not much chance of it being forced out.
i just wondered what you guys thought, i will prob leave the padding on it, as it works.

Probably a bit late to mention this now, but drilling a small hole at each end of a crack should stop it spreading.

lol, ive not filled it up with water yet, so if it leaks i will dig it out and do that.

did think of doing it, but its not spread in 20yrs

i would drilled the end of the cracks as already mentioned then bought some rods to suit preheated it and had a go at welding it

For a better bodge/repair use something like jb weld or quick steel.Fantastic stuff and probably far better than something made for filling dents!

i will stick we the plastic padding for the min.
the last lot had been there for twenty years, hopefully this will be.
