Probably at the wrong end of a 24 hr contest! lol.


Before I found that playing with steam trains was fun I was quite active in 2 mtr contesting, welding skills played quite a part in that. I managed to build a portable 60 foot mast that could take 2 x 19 ele Tonna's and be put up by one man. Not active at the moment, but when I get too old to play trains I'll be back. (?). May be able to find some pics, no promises.

Scuse my higgerance boys, what's the significance of 73? I realise the other figs are call signs.

Also - do you have to have licenses, and take a test?

Or is the radio ham thing like the Magic Circle, and either you can't tell me your secrets, or if you do, you'll have to kill me?

Yep, Jewel & Esk used to run courses at Milton Road campus, maybe they still do?

As with most things, it's changed over the years, first sit a C&G exam to get class B licence (allows you transmit locally) then take morse test to get class A licence (allows worldwide communication)

These days there are different tests to allow easier entry and no morse requirement for worldwide bit.

73 is a form of shorthand originally used in morse code meaning "best wishes" as 2 numbers are quicker / easier to send than 10 letters!

The above is amateur radio in a nutshell, if any one is interested it is best to find and contact a local club (or PM me for info)

I don't believe J&E college do anymore, no money in it.

Best bet in the Edinburgh area to get ona course is to contact Bob Glasgow at Cockenzie and Port Seton Amatuer Radio Club. http://www.cpsarc.com he runs excellent courses.

The current licence structure in a o condensed nutshell is:

Foundation:- basically all bands and all modes, limited to 10w. A one day course with a multiple choice exam. Pretty easy and gets you started. You will be allocated an M6 callsign (they ran out of M3s)

Intermediate:- more in depth knowledge, requirement for demonstration of practical electronic construction ability. The courses runs over several days, usually Saturdays. Another multi choice exam. For this you get a 2E/2M/2W/2I callsign, are allowed 50 and equipment you have built or modified yourself.

Advanced:- gives you an M0/MM0/MI0/MW0 callsign, up to 400w in some bands. No requirement to attend a course before taking the exam but it's well advised.

M1BT0 over here mainly use the radio in the winter but scan when in the garage occasionally go up the south downs got a new green lane bike so watch this space shopwatch is a good listen when working in the garage those £30 ebay radios are great for garage listening suprisingly good cheers Nick
