oval or flat capping can be used. the advantage is if u do use it u can generaly pull new cables through with it if u rewire in later years or pull extra length of cable if the ends get burnt. flat capping is easier to fit as u dont have to pull the cables through it

polystyrene insulation is used a lot though,so that plastic capping or oval conduit is needed

why would u need it with insulation ? its there to protect against mechanical damage

the pvc sheath reacts with polystyrene insulation

On old cables yes (but it is not detrimental to cable) on the new stuff there is stabilising agents.
