Just woundered if you guys cover your welders when not in use,if so what do you use?

I'd only cover the welder if i was doing a particularly dusty job over a long period otherwise no.

I cover the TIG set as it was new when I bought it: all the others date from the 80s and the damage was done before I got them

I tend to have periods where my welding sets are not used for perhaps a couple of weeks, I always cover them over when finished, using an old bed sheet cut down to size.

It simply keeps them clean but still allows air to circulate.

It also allows my better half (debatable) a chance to ridicule me putting the machinery 'to bed' and would they like a story read before going to sleep etc etc etc.

I literally do the same with owt I cover over. More just to keep dust off than owt else, but I use old bedsheets for the fact they'll protect against any slight air moisture and also won't promote condensation on surfaces.

The misses always asks before throwing out sheets, towels etc. If no good for draping over machinery then I rip it up for rags.

I used to have an Axminster carpet on my workshop floor - well OK, the TVR was parked on it, it made it so much nicer to work under

I vacuum quite a bit too. Never could stick seeing a mucky workplace. Don't mind clutter, but when you can feel stuff crunching underfoot just 'cos someone can't be arsed to spend a few minutes cleaning up the mess when they've finished, it really makes my teeth grate.

I've found using a paint brush, (else an old hair paste brush for larger stuff), rather than the brush attachment better though. Lot easier to brush stuff out of the nooks and crannies towards the nozzle with a separate brush.

Carpet is a cow for getting swarf out of though. It beds into even the skimpiest of piles like there's no tomorrow.

Oh aye, the carpet is long gone... though mostly because it smelled like a wet dog, I guess the previous owner was a hound fan.

I also use a paintbrush for getting the swarf out of nooks and crannies on the machine tools... my Vax has a length of small-bore hose Gaffa-taped into the nozzle to assist with crevices as well.

That's something I keep meaning to sort for mine, a small hose attachment. Several years and I still ain't got round to it. I've got a coupling to do it knocking about somewhere, from some keyboard cleaning or suchlike accessory kit which just shoves into the end of the nozzle. Only need to pop a length of hose on it, but it's still on the to-do list. Each time I clean up on the lathe I keep meaning to do it, but I always end up scraping out underneath the bed with a metal ruler instead. I'm gonna have to get my **** in gear with that one.

covering the machines up is probably a good idea in some cases depending on workshop set up-I just heard about a tig that had sucked in some nibbler chippings which it did not like.
I do my grinding and cutting just outside the door,but some of the dust creeps in.
I sometimes mist the floor with my garden sprayer when having a sweep up as it keeps the dust down-sure the machines are made for a workshop environment but a cover in some circumstances could be classed as sort of preventive maintainance?.
