Could someone help me with a former?

Hi,

I'm looking for something like in this thread:

I want a former to push into a piece of 2" tube, to flare it out to 3" (like a reducer). The fluted piece of the pipe needs to be 1" long.

Also, could I do this in a vice?

I did a few hundred of them with a hammer. I made some dies and a punch on a lathe to do what i wanted. But i used copper tube to keep the splitting down. Then i got a small arbor press that made them form easier. You prob could use a big vise but a press would be easier...Bob

What about a solid steel ball? you can get them in a range of sizes, one of these and a modicum of violence should do the job cheaply. Can I come and watch as it flies across the room and takes out the window. See link for a supplier.

thats a great idea chunko! wonder how much force it will take to push a ball into a 2" pipe though?

Perhaps if I put 2 cuts in the pipe and then welded the cuts after, it would be easier?

big ball and big hammer should do the trick you could weld a piece of flat bar to one side to give you something to hold while you hit it or get someone else to hold it and use a proper size hammer

Maybe four or more cuts spread radially would do the job.

I have a set of *exhaust flaring dollies, for use when making (read bodging) exhaust pipes, can't remember where I got them though. There are 3 dollies for flaring the 'socket' end of the pipeand a thing with a handle and a pair of rollers for making the flare parallel. I have had them for 20+years though.

yep, thats the one, but mine has a an extra bit that you put in the pipe and turn, that looks a bit like a g-clamp, with one roller on the inside of the pipe and two on the outside. On reading the instructions, its for shrinking the end of a pipe to get it in a smaller socket.

That just expands the pipe though doesnt it? I want it to be 'cone' shaped?
