I've bought a "cheap" forged steel vise s year or so ago
125mm a bulk of steel paid 160 euros and it's still on the cheap side for the category ,I don't know if I have a picture

You're far better with something big, old and heavy but if you're struggling to find something used locally, I have one of these alongside my bigger old record vice. Not the quality of the old ones by any stretch but mine seems fine (it's around 8 years old now).

Depends if you have a toolstation near you.

pretty much diy and femor 60 quid should get you a nice second hand 6 inch record one or similar

In all this time I have never owned a brand new vice - every one I have ever had - has been secondhand.

In the past I managed with a £5 Carboot Made in Taiwan vice but now use a £10 Fortis unbreakable bought from a car boot, just wait and one will turn up, I wouldnt spend more than £5 on a cheap vice, older the better mines about 100 years old

I had a record for 50 years and broke it recently (abuse) I don't think I'll get my moneys worth out of the new one so bought cheap, five years done the line and it's holding up just fine. So far.

I was in Machine Mart few weeks back nosing around,they had a shelf full of vices of all shapes and sizes,know what,you could just see how tacky there were,@Che just keep your eyes open for old and british doesn't have to look fancy and pretty they're out there,keep looking
Tip,quick release IMO is a must

Cheap vices are the pits, I remember doing a land rover u/j in one, and cranking the caps home and the vice snapped in two, big and old is what you want.

All he needs is something suitable. It's fine saying he needs a QR vice, for example, (& I merrily admit I love QR vices), but they are notably larger than plain screw alternatives.

If he has limited space, &/or minimal requirement from a vice, then a standard, modern vice will likely suit perfectly well.

You all know what I'm like with vices, but there's a place for each & all types, both new & old.

Get an old Record or Parkinsons vise on one of the online markets. Preferably a 'quick release', makes life a lot easier.
