It has stayed upright and the price i was quoted was around £1000 but there is a long run going down the side of the garage only 1 brick high and headers, The wall is only 1 brick deep most of the way up as there is a block wall behind it, so i think the price was crazy.

Some IT contractors are lucky to get that after years of study and experience.

I was getting £50/hour as an IT contractor in the late '90s. You might get a trainee for £35/hour.

I have just paid someone to fit a kitchen for me - I could have done it myself - I have the skills and tools. To be honest I would have enjoyed doing it as well. But I could'nt do it - because I am too busy at work - fixing other peoples cars and trucks.

I pay other people to fix my van for precisely that reason. Know I'm capable but quicker and more economical to let someone else do it while I keep earning.

I can lay bricks well but I'm slow.
I'd get a brickie in for a full extension and be earning money elsewhere while he works.

I was getting £50/hour as an IT contractor in the late '90s. You might get a trainee for £35/hour.

That was before they introduced a fast track visa scheme for so called IT professionals in about 2004 - that is why I left IT - they brought in 120,000 people over a 3 year period - mainly from India - drove the rates right down.

Yes there are higher paid jobs - I was on £1000 a day once but for very specialised stuff in London.

The rates for most trades / speacilists, varies depending on supply and demand. IT rates for example were rediculous for the millenium bug due to a lack of people. Then every youngster accross the world wants to be an IT bod as school careers tell them this is the future, now you have over supply, rates drop.

Builders plumbers etc its the same, when there is no work, and ample people rstes creep down, when there busy and there s undersupply rates creep up.

I saw it many times over the years in the oil industry. current day rates are the same as they were 7 years ago.

Guess if you need money, you take whats out there to pay the bills. It just doesnt work sitting at home wanting a day rate of 500 when others will do the job for 200. You starve.

You'd be surprised, I'm a mainframe/mid-range/storage/network engineer for a major mainframe manufacturer and we don't get anywhere near some of rates quoted here. I'm pretty handy, built my own furniture/windows and replaced all the timber in my roof and if i could get £350 a day even if I took into account all the stuff invovled with self employment I'd be earning way more than I do now and I do ok but have a lot of OOH work.

My company allowed quite a few engineers to take volutary separations(statutary minimum) in the last two years and they are now trying to employ people probably on £10K less than the people who left and unsurprisingly they aren't getting people who already have the required skills

Where did I say server? Server does not equal mainframe (whatever you might think) and mainframe is the key point here. Did you really work in IT?

You're right, I would be surprised. For people with a genuine mainframe skill set, rates are going up, not down. This is largely due to the fact that the majority of the folks working in mainframe are either at or approaching retirement age and 'they aren't making them any more'. Mainframe is such a totally different discipline to Windows/Unix/Linux that pretty much complete re-training is required.

The reality is most of these big corporations are all about the profit and growth so paying people the big money they did 15 years a go doesn't fit with the business plan. Many of the guys who've left in recent years are old school large system engineers and I don't know any that have gone on to find top dollar jobs.

I can assure you I've looked for those big money jobs and even with 25yrs manufacturer experience they don't exist or would result in worse working conditions and I'm better off just sitting it out.

I can only speak to what I know and the area I work in. I work for a major UK Bank, and we support the mainframe infrastructure in the UK. In the UK we have at least 8 mainframes on the floor and others in data centres around the globe. Yes, they try to get away with paying us the minimum they can (doesn't every company?) but for once they are on the wrong side of the supply and demand equation. It doubtless won't be that way forever, but at the moment that's the way it is. Google 'mainframe demographics crisis' for some light reading. Here's one I googled earlier.
