Cost effective air fed painting mask?

I should be picking up an air fed welding helmet later if the FB guy meets me as planned.

This takes care of welding fumes.

But for painting tasks I presume an ESAB air feed system could be utilised with a clear visor type mask?

Anything fairly inexpensive for DIY use that could be suggested please?

I have asthma and I do use the dual canister 3m filter masks for painting. But an air fed mask may provide better protection again I am thinking or maybe not the case?

An air fed mask is the only UK approved protection. I bought the Iwata 2020 which was reasonably priced. I do still have an old 3M helmet which filters sem to be scarce for. You would be welcome to that gratis, if you want it.

Is it a large diameter tube type connection the 3m masks take? (Pardon my ignorance I don't know if an air fed painters masks can be fed from a dedicated compressed air line or something different to a pump pack like this avove)

I am thinking I would like to use the ESAB air filter pack to feed the air mask.

I see the Iawata air fed painting masks are fed from a compressor. Maybe that is better as the air and compressor itself are located anway from the paint.

The ESAB filter can cope with welding gases but paint would likely destroy it even in small amounts if not designed for that use. Essentially the filter is in the paint environment so gets heavy contamination.

Yes, they are fed from a triple filter after the compressor. Otherwise you would be breathing in the contaminated air.

Using that esab would be no better than the mask you are using to paint, you are just moving the filter from your head to your waist.
It might be worse, the esab filters might not be suitable for painting.

As an aside, this was the ESAB helmet that I did buy and take home this evening:



Full working order and at that price even though I messaged half hour after it was posted last night seller said someone was buying it today so "sold".

I said to keep my number and if the buyer let's him down I'd go buy it right away. Of course the "buyer" was a no show so I got it tonight

I will fully strip it down for a thorough clean. The filters look decent but slightly yellow so I ordered new genuine filters. (Main and pre filters).

The only other spare part I need to buy for it is the chin seal material which is torn on this mask. Otherwise, very pleased with this and having a proper air fed welding mask for my weekend welding projects like the flux core Lincoln wire I need to use up. With my Asthma it's really important for me to avoid inhaling garbage when I can! This may be overkill for a DIYr but at this price it has to make sense....

PS I now understand the ESAB is a welding mask / air supply only and that is what I'll be using it for.

I'll get a proper air fed painting mask sorted in spring.
