I didn't like bankers before all financial markets went belly up, now I hate the b'stards. They don't care sitting on their piles of bonus payments.

Anyway, is this downturn reflected in steel prices you're paying?

I've only been playing on angle offcuts found on site so have no idea on the ups and downs of steel prices yet.

Also, can you estimate steel prices on a weight basis only? If so, how much would you pay per kg?

Steel prices have dropped but it takes time for the reductions to filter through to the end user. The Stockholders will have bought their steel months ago. The prices have rocketed and then instantaneously dropped so there is a lot of steel about at various prices depending on when it was bought.
You should start seeing lower prices in the near future but shop around some stockholders will have been luckier than others.

What could be a worry is whether Corus decide to shut down a smelting site - on the news this morning the talking-head-financial-man was suggesting that to re-start an actual production plant (as opposed to a rolling plant) after a shut down was likely to cost tens of millions as the furnaces would need re-lining if all production was stopped and they were allowed to go cold.

And another thing - mention made by Weldingartisan of SS prices, the base materials for specialist steels also comes out of the primary smelting processes - What happens to the UK specialist steels users if we lose even more of the UK's capability of making these materials? (Stainless types, nimonics, martensitics,etc)

Ive got 3 sons who all (until recently) worked at Corus Scunthorpe. The youngest got laid off before Christmas but he was with a Contractor, the other two work directly for Corus and they are worried this morning.

They are all qualified electricians but the young'un is finding it hard to get interviews never mind another job. I guess at 22 he is behind men in their 30's and 40's in experience. 22 and hes been made redundant twice.

Im beginning to think my advice wasnt that good. I told them to stay out of welding and do Electrical / Carpentry / Plumbing as there would always be jobs.

Age shouldn't matter but it still does. Have they got there 2382 and 2931? If they haven't it would be worth getting them so there fully up to date with the regs changes

I never encouraged my two boys to go into any sort of 'technical' work - I tried to let them make their minds up without presenting any particular job as being 'right' or well paid, whatever.

Result - my eldest lad works for the County Council and certainly isn't paid enough - he's in the highways section, my younger son went into the electrical trade but couldn't get a real apprenticeship.

Hence he worked as a 'mate' for about four years, for a variety of contractors while he did one-day-a-week college, funded by me and him, to get his Part III C&G.
So many of the contractors he worked for were employing eastern Europeans with questionable abilities and qualifications - but hey, they were cheap!!

One job he did was on a railway power and signalling rewire down near Portsmouth. By the time he'd paid his lodging, food and petrol bills he was just breaking even - I think it was worth the experience for him but he got bugger-all out of it financially.

To be honest, money-wise, they have done well. Corus are good payers and with Shifts and overtime the money has been good. Obvioulsy when it goes its more difficult.

My lads are OK but they are making 730 people redundant in Rotherham. Thats a lot of people in one swoop. Times are hard or will be for some.

My other half's dad works at the scunny works, we've not heard anything from him yet but fingers crossed he's ok!!!

I don't think there's anyone who hasn't been affected, or who knows someone who has. A good few of my mates have been made redundant already.

Hi,

heard on the news on my way home tonight that Corus are planning on 1000 of the 2400 being in Wales. If it's 750 at Rotherham and maybe a few at Redcar then it may not be so many at Scunny...at least this time around!

I hate to think this way but it'll get grim everywhere before too long...

500 of those jobs are going hear in Newport, the recesion has hit the area badly as it is and is only set to get alot worse.
