Personally I think Corten (or weathering steel) is over rated. I bought a sheet for a garden screen. Cut it out on the plasma CNC and 18 months on it looks exactly the same as a mild steel screen I cut at the same time. Same colour, same texture.

I know the Angel of the North is made from Corten.
But someone once told me it was invented for making "shipping containers".
Is that true?
I don’t know about invented but I know it’s the approved stuff.
the containers with Lloyds Approval have a plaque on them stating they have to be repaired in Corten.
the Chinese one trip ones aren’t.

I heard from a lorry driver Felixstowe is cloged up with returnable containers - as we only get goods from China - nothing ever goes back to them. What do the ships use for a return load - or do they go another way roound the oceans to fill the return trip?
Invented in the States for mining wagons and railroad cars.
I believe they tried painting some railroad cars made from Corten and they rotted at an accelerated rate. Seems because of the paint it wasn't able to form it's protective coat.

Its supposed to.....eventually the mild steel will spall and go black and lumps fall off....the Corten will stay Orange or maybe darken a bit

It was built by Hartlepool Fabs who also built parts of the Wembley Arch....Im not sure but I think Cleveland Bridge in Darlington got both jobs but subbed some parts out.. We (Lincoln) supplied some of the SAW wire and Flux.....for most processes the wire is almost a matching composition but for Sub Arc it has to be different because the high heat input would cause "hot shortness" due to the Copper content.
A while after they were building some large structure from Corten in Spain....the management decided to pre-empt the order and buy in tonnes of steel that had the Copper.....We (the technicians) told them that it would be good unless they decided to sub arc it....they knew best....it cracked..

When there were some issues with the welding on Wembley arch and then also some industrial action on the project (the foregoing is a list not a connection), Cleveland Bridge was always the name in the construction press.
There's three scrap sheets of Corten stacked up outside Liverpool Street station. Even with a Transit's considerable load-carrying ability, no-one has yet uplifted it:

Corten steel sculpture with multiple failures, lead to its eventual removal. Hate to think of the wasted tax money.

Sorry for the thread hijack but this is the house built by Wayne Scott, a rather clever chap I know in NZ. A prolific "ideas" man. He'll design a desk then a crane. Often accompanied by beautiful charcoal sketches. Steel feature "reeds" are Corten steel about 5 years old, hence the post:
Beautiful backdrop ruined by an eyesore of a building in my opinion.
But I've never seen anything I've liked in bare corten steel. Best left for shipping containers or needs a good coat of paint.

That was built by Davy Markham in Sheffield. They used Lincoln gas shielded flux cored wire (containing Nickel but no Copper)....They had lots of welding issues because of the design...access was poor and the joints were wrong from a welding perspective. I dont know what caused the bit to fall off.
Davy Markham have gone to the wall since....they were on a wing and a prayer for years
I definitely read that one of the American railroad carriers painted some Corten coaches where they'd not been previously painted and they rusted quick as.
