Not the most scientific test but I said in another thread I would do it so I will
I'm not testing really gloopy products that render tools almost useless until you wipe it off, just the usual products that people may use to prevent anything from wood chisels to shiny bits on a mill from rusting.
So I have an old 12" square surface plate. I rescued this from a rusting mess so it has a little bit of pitting here and there, but its not bad. I have cleaned it up with fine abrasive then degreased it with alcohol.
Here it is sectioned up into 6 areas with four candidate products, WD40, Camellia Oil, Gibbs Brand and Liberon Lubricating wax. They all purport to have rust inhibiting properties either on the tin or by reputation. The top centre sections will have nothing on it, i.e. the control to see how much rust there would have been without anything on it.
So I have one section left, this may be for the ubiquitous oily rag but I'm open to suggestions, as long as they are oily or waxy
I haven't applied the products yet, I shall probably do that tomorrow then place the surface plate in the workshop and see what happens.
Cheers
Andy
