The two basic techniques are rightward and leftward, leftward technique is with the filler rod leading the torch this is the usual method for oxy acet and tig, rightward is when the torch is moving away from the filler, leftward is generally used on materials up to about 5 to 6mm although if working on positional joints a combination of both techniques will probably be appropriate, as zzr1200 says right to left, or left to right depends on whether your left handed
