Cordless screwdriver and drill

Hi,

Can you guys give me a hand in choosing a drill driver please.

I've currently got the Ryobi 14.4V Twinpack CHICHD1442 from B&Q and what a load of rubbish, the battery dies in two seconds or one second if you hit anything slightly hard.

I've found the Bosch GSR 14.4VLi Li-Ion Drill Driver, this comes with 2 x 2.6ah batteries. Is it any good?

How would this rate to my existing ryobi and dewalt tools?

update: just found the DeWalt XRP DC988L1 18V Li-Ion Cordless Combi Drill for £149, is that good? Only comes with one battery though.

Of the three I would take the bosch...I find the yellow stuff to be fragile & work shy and ryobi too variable

I have a Bosch GSR 14.4V-Li with 1.3Ah batteries - it's a first-rate bit of kit (the only thing it's missing is a hammer function but, since I got it for half-price with three batteries, I can live with using the mains drill for masonry ). It has an awful lot of grunt for its size.

Go for it i have a DC988 and more poky than a mains 550W hammer drill.
Normally come with two 2.4a Lion and charger. Just upgraded to the Nano and charger, get about 10 mins extra.
Respectable QR Rohm chuck and dont need a spindle lock to undo or tighten!
Just done a job drilling 5 holes in concrete reinforced fence posts 12mm wiith masonary drills and still had a little left from the battery. Brickwork - like drilling a hard wood might give you some idea.
Torque settings a little iffy for screwdriving small stuff.

Best thing is other tools using same 18V use same batteries, so only need to buy bare bones around £85 to £120 shopping around for majority of other tools they do.

Most 14.4V you can stop the chuck with hand but the Bosch are usually good choices sold off on the cheap. Above DC988 was equivalent to a 24V Bosch at time.

This will be better bare bones, case and charger £78 delivered just need a 2.4a, 2.6 or 3amp battery around £70 unless you go Nano and charger.

How longs a peice of string really,depends what you need it for,if you want an all rounder just for drilling(not hammer) and driving my top choice makita 6270d small,light yet will still break ya wrist,had mine 3yrs now and is as good as new but looks like its done 12 rounds

If you looking for the big boys my choice deffo bosch,i have a 24v 3ah sds ok for drilling a channel tunnel,but wouldn't use it for screwing plasterboards to ceilings

Here is another vote for DeWALT after spending so much on naf equipment i have been changing everything battery to dewalt i now have about ten batterys and lots of equipment that i am so happy with only one charger/light has let me down in 4 years and it was repaired for free under warranty.
I allways look after my tools but they still work hard for a living.

Have a look @ abbey power on the bay of E as they have some good deals.

I'm on my second 18V Ryobi and I cant fault it weither it be drilling steel, timber or concrete.
I'm doing work on steel security doors (3mm thick) and each door needs 15no 6mm holes in each and i did 26 doors yesterday with 1 battery.
Had Makita before and I will never spend that much money on a battery drill again, spare or replacement batteries are scandlous money.

Thanks for your replies but i've just had a re think and probably a smaller drill driver would do, ive found the following

Metabo PowerMaxx Pro 7.2V Li-ion Screwdriver
Hitachi DB10DL 10.8V Li-ion Screwdriver
Bosch GSR 10.8V-Li-2 Drill Driver 10.8V

Any thoughts?

p.s. have had a look a dewalt and dont like the idea of using ni-cd or ni-mh batteries again.

Makita batteries are ridiculous prices.... but the tools are almost indestructable...( and I am reliably informed they are pretty cheap to repair) I have stuff I bought 15+ years ago working as well as new, but use 3rd party batteries, most of which are as good as the manufacturers ime.

IN fact the only makita tool I have that has died on me was a drill.... but grtting dropped 30m off a scaffold will do that

NiCd should be avoided these days but NiMh are OK & means you are not paying a premium for batteries ( although the LI batteries are unbelievable)

For comparison purposes:- A friend of mine owns a power tool repair business, main repair center for almost all power tools. They are also main agents for several. They generally reccommend, metabo, makita or bosch pro(ie blue body), fein, hilti stihl etc as they are the tools they get returned least often for repair. Although they are agents and main repair center for the yellow stuff they will not sell them.

Have a look for 'reconditioned' tools on fleabay.
I think it means they been unboxed and displayed, I buy all my stuff like this and get some great buys, typically around 1/3 off 'new' prices.
Dewalt cordless? I have been using my 14v hammerdrill/driver for three years still impressed by battery life.

Watch out for the three batteries offers where they are 1.3amp hour batteries rather than 2 x 3amp hour.

Buying new tools is such a stressful business, we become like women buying handbags.

I like the yellow stuff as it brings a dash of colour to the dull workshop grind, like daffodils in the spring. Keeps me in touch with my feminine side. Bosch Blue? far to camp, ,Makita? turquoise vulgar vulgar, Bosch green? matches my tongue after a night on the cider. Admit boys these are the things that matter most, and of course the willy waving comp's about amp hours, volts and torque levels.

Get a life and buy a 20 quid drill as long as it matches your shoes, in fact buy a coordinated range to match al your outfits.

FWIW, in today's e-mail from Axminster they have the Bosch listed for £120 down from £160 (link).

I have a cheapo 24V drill, the batteries are crap so I have been looking for
another drill. I used my brothers Bosch, the clutch on the chuck is wonderful, my cheapo has to be done up with a pair of swan necks if you don't want the drill to spin! Do all the better drills have a clutch?
Are there any with a decent top speed, I could do with one which will replace an air drill, I think my air drill does around 3000 rpm, great for smallish drills.
