cordless makita grinders??

why is it so hard to find a 4" makita cordless grinder.
115mm/125mm grinders are plenty.
plenty of cheap chinese rubbish ,the reason why I say rubbish is that I have one and it doesn't spin fast enough.
on ebay add it state 20000 rpm it seem slower than my corded makita 4" grinder but label has come off so don't know the speed on that.
what other good quality grinders that will accept the makita battery?

Probably because it appears they don't make one. 4" grinders went out of fashion a couple of decades ago, as did 7". What would a 4" cordless do that a 115mm wouldn't?

Almost all cordless grinders spin slower than their corded equivalent in the same diameter.

You can look on Makita's website to see the specs. of every product in their current line up.

As a rule of thumb, all mains grinders from a Dremel through a 3" air-powered one to a 14" Stihl saw spin at an rpm that turns the blade at 80 m/s (metres per second).

4" grinders are rare because of supply and demand. Not many people use them so a manufacturer would not make something they cannot sell.

There is also less choice of consumables for 4" machines.

Of all the fakes, ones that take Makita batteries are most common (find a clone that takes DeWalt, Milwaukee or Bosch). The Katsu ones are acceptable. They do not sell a 4" version at all but do have a 3" corded version. Check availability of discs if tempted.

Most cordless will spin slower than a mains corded, less power available and more efficient.

Makita only appear to make a corded version, so you will be limited to the chinese versions or a battery adaptor.

However I can say I quite like the 3" grinders, again they dont appear to make one, mine is a cheapy 12v Lidl. The securing bolt head is much smaller than a normal grinder so despite the small size, you get more usable depth out of a disc. Mine also seems fairly capable with cutting discs or flap wheels. One problem is no tool shop sells 3"/76mm consumables so limited to Amazon/Ebay.

came across a big box of stones for a 4 incher and then another car booter had a working Metabo grinder.......
so it'll do for odd jobs on the bench....

Agree with all, genuine Katsu seem to have cornered the market on Makita look alikes.

Got to use one of their cordless brushless reciprocals a few weeks ago, dreadful, I do own however one of their impact drivers, nothing special, a little slow but surprisingly it does drive and well.

@johnakay should be looking at a brushless cordless unit but he won't get anywhere near 20000rpm unless it's a typo.

bought it last year. just trying out what best for my two lads can buy me for xmas.yes I know it's early.

Small, far away.

Looks can be deceptive. If you look at the pictures, it notes 9.5mm as the spindle thread. A 115mm would have M14 (9/16").

You can also look at the nut and look at a standard M14 nut. The pin spanner holes are a lot nearer the thread on that one which takes 22mm bore discs.

What 'pads' do you have left? Do you mean abrasive wheels or something different?

If you look around, you can buy an M14 female to M10 male adaptor to fit 4" consumables to a larger grinder (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285286335626). There is never going to be a problem with overspeeding when fitting smaller to larger.

You keep using the word " normal " cordless is very much the norm and as has been said, cordless will never be as fast as corded.

Your choice while no doubt a good one is not brushless, I suspect you are getting a bit hung up on RPM but if RPM is important, your choice is faster then their brushless but a full battery charge won't last as long with a brushed motor.

But if you have a stack of 18v batteries, I don't suppose it will matter that much, many of my Makita tools are getting on and brushed, they keep plodding on and do their thing.

Fair enough, I'm wary of many eBay descriptions and I think the first one @johnakay linked to said it ran at 20000 rpm but if he's after a 4" it may well do but runs at 7500rpm which seems more like it.

You are right that on those sort of things the listings are incorrect. 20k rpm is nonsense. In one of those to which I linked above, it says 220v power and 1000w (in a cordless grinder).

It is useful to know that a 4" Makita-batteried cordless is available. The clones are making tools even the originals do not.

I suspect you are getting a bit hung up on RPM
not hung up on rpm never had a battery one before.
but now you lads have said its normal then that's ok.

I've got 3 corded grinders. one is a100mm and 2 x 115mm.
the 115mm one used for cutting tubes etc when I was in the business making grab rails etc (matec orange in colour.)
the other 115mm is a metabo which is hardly used.
I bought that for my younger son but he doesn't like grinders so its surplus to requirement.

These old brushed grinders are crap. I've still got one, but its had 2 sets of brushes through it and half the power of the brushless ones.
A genuine brushless makita 115mm/125mm is a great bit of kit, I've got 2 of them.
I've got no time for the "fakita" copies, i tried one and the number of issues i had with it due to build quality... I ended up smashing it with a hammer.
